Soft Paws By Aaron Clause Kids Korner (A story especially for young animal lovers!) Once upon a time, there was a Town Fair, and on the nicest day of the fair there was going to be a competition to see who was the Best Pet. There were only two contestants in the competition, Cat and Dog. As the time of the competition came close, Cat and Dog were both very excited. The announcer soon came up to the loudspeaker, and said, Welcome to the Best Pet Competition! The two contestants today will be Dog and Cat. They will be judged in three different contests. The first contest will be who can catch a mouse the fastest! Cat smiled he was happy because he knew he could win that one! Then the announcer said, The second contest will be who can fetch a ball the fastest! Dog was happy this time. She would win that contest for sure! The announcer finished, Finally, Cat and Dog will be judged on how much love they can give a person! Good luck, Cat and Dog! Neither Cat nor Dog knew who would win the last contest, but they were too excited to think about that right now! On with the first contest, catch the mouse! Cat goes first! said the announcer. Cat ran after the mouse and snatched it up in his paws, and brought it back to the judge in 20 seconds! The crowd cheered for Cat. Now its Dogs turn! Catch the mouse! said the announcer. But as hard as Dog tried, she couldnt catch that mouse. She barked and chased the mouse, but she just couldnt put a paw on it. Finally, the judge blew the whistle. Time is up! the judge said. The crowd cheered for Dog anyway. Cat wins! The score is Cat-1, Dog-0! said the announcer, and the crowd cheered again for Cat! On with the second contest, fetch the ball! Dog goes first! Said the announcer. And no sooner had the judge thrown the ball than Dog grabbed it in her mouth and brought it back in 20 seconds! The crowd cheered for Dog. Now its Cats turn! Fetch the ball! said the announcer. But Cat could not grab the ball in his little mouth, and his small paws could not snatch the ball like he did the mouse. Finally, the judge blew the whistle. Time is up! the judge said. The crowd cheered for Cat anyway. Dog wins! The score is Dog-1, Cat-1! said the announcer, and the crowd cheered again for Dog! On with the last contest this one is the tie-breaker! said the announcer. An old man walked out with a chair and sat down on it. Dog and Cat show us how friendly you are! said the announcer. Dog and Cat went to the old man and did their best to show how sweet they could be! Dog barked and wagged his tail, and Cat meowed and purred. Then, Dog rolled over and licked the old mans chin, and Cat jumped in the old mans lap and rubbed against his neck. The old man was so tickled that he laughed out loud! The crowd cheered for both Cat and Dog, and then the whistle blew. Time is up! said the judge. The judge will now make her decision, and the winner will get the Best Pet Gold Medal! said the announcer. The crowd cheered, but Dog and Cat were worried. Cat thought Dog had won, but Dog thought Cat had done the best. Here comes the judge! shouted the announcer. Then the judge stepped up to the loudspeaker, and said, The winner of the Best Pet Gold Medal is and he held up not ONE, but TWO medals! Both Dog and Cat, because neither one is better than the other! Congratulations! The judge put a gold medal on both Dog and Cat, and both of them were very happy! Then, the old man came up to Dog and Cat and offered them a home. So, Dog and Cat, with the crowd cheering for both, walked home with the old man and lived happily ever after! Always remember that you are not worse than others for things you cannot do, and no better than others for things you can do. Above all, remember that we can ALL be friendly. Cats and dogs are both wonderful pets. If you and your parents are thinking about getting one, ask them to bring you to the Shelter to look. Bye!
