Soft Paws By Aaron Clause Toy Time! Greetings, readers! Let me be frank as you all know, our shelter is in constant need of donations for our very survival. Our annual fundraisers, such as our Membership Drive (which jump-starts the year) and our Brick Appeal (which provides special funding for the donors choice of food, shelter, or medicine), are helpful in their own right. Special events, such as our Dog Run Campaign, raffles, and food drives are crucial as well, as are animal sponsorships and general donations of money or supplies. Every bit helps, from our largest donors to our penny-catchers. Today, however, Id like to ask you for some particular items- TOYS! Im sure you can imagine how tedious a shelter stay can be on our animals. 24-7 in a confined environment, getting a little playtime when the weathers nice, means a lot of long hours with nothing to do unless you can help. Our financial donations go solely toward making sure that all of our tenants, now and in the future, are and will remain safe, well cared for, and ultimately, adopted into loving, caring homes. This leaves little, if any, room for buying the small things that can so greatly improve the quality of our charges lives during their stay. Please, if youre able, think about offering some fun things to occupy our furry friends and keep them from a boring, dreary existence! Here are some great suggestions real heart-winners: - NYLABONES: Hard, synthetic plastic play toys that can be used, sanitized easily, and shared amongst our pups. Chewing relieves both stress and boredom, and re-usables are always preferred! - KONGS: Hard, rubber toys that are bouncy, nearly indestructible, and that have a large cavern inside to hide treats like biscuits or peanut butter. Great fun! - RAWHIDES: Pigs ears, bone-shaped, all sorts you name it; they dont last us long, but are well-loved and always needed. Basted ones are great, too! - BELL BALLS: One-inch diameter balls with a little ball enclosed in the center for hours of kitten playtime. The adult cats love them, too and we can never have too many! - CATNIP: In any form stuffed toys, in sewed socks, or just in the raw to sprinkle in the cages, catnip is another fun way to spend the hours. Be creative; bring in something we havent seen yet! The most original weve seen so far is a one-size-fits-all glove from which cat-tantalizing fuzzballs dangle off each finger by a string. Can you beat that? Feel free to call us with any questions about being a part of our fundraisers or about toy donations at (518) 828-6044. Or, better yet, stop down and see us at 125 Humane Society Road, off Route 66 (about a mile south of the intersection with Route 9H) in Hudson. Our hours are Monday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and until 7 p.m. on Thursday. Visit our website at www.cghs.org.
