Shortly after our marrage, my wife and I went to DSC in Marietta. This was 1980 and we had our first VCR, a Beta. We became involved in the hearts tournement and quickly rose to the third level. (My wife being the better card player soon left me behind.) One of the people that I played against was a tall man who was dubbing tapes as we played. Before I forget, maybe I should explain that he was wearing a long scarf, a floppy hat and an oversize coat. He had a beta resting in the corner and I got interested so he made me a copy. I can't remember his name, but it was all his fault. He recorded Rocky Horror and Doctor Who: City of Death on that tape that I didn't even watch until I returned home. I guess it should be needless to say it, but I loved this quirky, flashing (as they had used a video camera to change from PAL to NSTC), blurry show. I took it back and proceeded to show it to all my friends. I unknowingly created the first Doctor Who fan orginization in my area.
My wife and I moved then from the beaufiful Mississippi Gulf Coast and migrated to Austin, Texas. (A wonderful area that I would love to live in always.) This area had a marvelous PBS station that actually played Doctor Who on Saturday nights. It was a form of paradise for me. Our time in Austin was cut painfully short when a fire burned Martian Metals (the place I worked) to the ground.
