Summary

THE LION
In woodlands, 12th century Saracen soldiers led by a man with a scarred face prepare to ambush a hunting party which includes the King, Richard the Lionheart. The TARDIS materialises nearby; emerging from the ship, the Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki find themselves confronted by Saracen warriors. Barbara is seized by the Saracens; the rest of the party encounter the King's troupe, who have been attacked. Richard has been injured; to trick the Saracens one of his knights, William des Preaux, announces that he is the King and allows the Saracens to capture him. After another skirmish, the Doctor, Ian and Vicki are left tending the wounded knight de Tomebti; the Doctor decides that they can obtain the Icing's assistance in finding Barbara by returning de Tornebu and Richard's jewelled belt to the English encampment in nearby Jaffa.
Barbara and des Preaux are held at the encampment of Sultan sa'ah ed-Din—Saladin—at Ramlah; Barbara joins the knight's pretence by claiming that they are actually King Richard and his sister Joanna. The prisoners are proudly taken before Saphadin, Saladiri's brother, by the scarred Saracen Ernir El AIdr. However, Saladin and Saphadin soon realise that the pair are impostors. While the chivalry of des Preaux and Barbara is respected, El Akir is made to look a fool in the eyes of the Sultan. Saladin tells Barbara that she, in the manner of Scheherazade, will tell him stories or face death.
The Doctor and Vicki manage to pilfer local clothing from the market of Jaffa that night (indeed, the clothes have already been stolen once). Suitably attired, with Vicki as a pageboy, the travellers convey the wounded de Tornebu to the palace where Richard thanks them and agonises over the consequences of the conflict he is caught up in. Ian requests the King's help in arranging for Barbara's release from Saladin, but Richard refuses: "This woman can rot in one of Saladin's prisons until her hair turns white before I'll trade with the man who killed my friends..."

THE KNIGHT OF JAFFA
With help from de Tomeki, the Doctor manages to persuade Richard of the capital that could be made from revealing that only des Preaux and Barbara were captured. Delighted, Richard invites the Doctor to join his court. The group meet the Princess Joanna, who has received another gift from Saphadin. The king realises that peace could be created by offering Joanna's hand in marriage to Saphadin; he knights Ian and sends 'Sir Ian of Jaffa' with this secret offering to Saladin's court.
In Ramlah, El Akir strikes a bargain with Luigi Ferrigo, a merchant from Genoa; in return for an audience with Saladin, Ferrigo agrees to help El Akir capture Barbara so that he can have his revenge for her disgracing him. Claiming to come from des Preaux, Ferrigo tricks Barbara into accompanying him to the stables where El Akir grabs her. Later on, Ferrigo's discussions with Saphadin are wrecked when des Preaux and a servant called Sheyrah enter and prove his involvement in Barbara's abduction. Ian soon arrives and determines to set out to rescue his friend.
At Jaffa, the Doctor and Vicki are almost landed in trouble when the market trader Ben Daheer recognises them as wearing clothing stolen from him, but the Doctor skilfully transfers the blame onto Thatcher, the soldier who stole the robes from the palace in the first place. El Akir arrives with Barbara at his palace in Lydda, but she evades his guards. Hiding in a dark archways, she is suddenly grabbed from behind and held as the searching Saracens approach...

THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE
The figure who has grabbed Barbara is Haroun Ed- chin; he attacks her pursuers and takes her to his home where she meets his daughter, Saflya. Haroun reveals that his wife and son were killed by a Akir, who has also taken his other daughter, Maimuna. Barbara is left with Safiya while Haroun sees if it is dear for her escape from Lydda, but El Akir's men are searching the Northern quarter and arrive at the house. In order to save Satiya and leave her safe in hiding, Barbara has no alternative but to allow herself to be captured by the soldiers.
At Jaffa, Joanna learns that Vicki is really a girl and agrees to look alter her if the Doctor will be her ally in court. In Richard's court, the Doctor's support of the King's plans for peace earn him the wrath of the Earl of Iricester; Joanna is still obliv- bus of her brother's offer to Saphadin. The Doctor refuses to break the King's confidence to Joanna,
