Well, if there's
one thing I do, it's watch a lot of movies!! And just like everyone,
I have my favorites, my un-favorites, and of course, my opinions.
And yes, I do have a tendency to quote entire movies on command, so darn
it, I might as well use that talent!!!
Clueless--Yeah, okay--so
it's shallow, popular, and ditzy. It's still a wonderful movie, and
one from which I have almost every word memorized. It's got heart.
Just NEVER EVER watch it with me, 'cause I have a tendency to talk along
with the characters. Very bad habit, that.
Empire Records--This on
may be simple, but one thing it's not is shallow. It just makes me
laugh to read reviews of it that say it has no point, and that it's a shallow
silly little fairy tale. My response? Get a clue, and get younger,
please? And no, if you don't get it--I'm not gonna explain it!
Natural Born Killers--Seems
a strange choice among the rest of these, doesn't it? And I'm sure
some people think it's evil and immoral, but I've got kind of a tough hide
for that stuff. What I see in it is love, devotion, humanity, and
a LOT of artistry. Plus it kinda creeps me out, because when I finish
watching it, I just want to go out and murder people... ;-)
Schindler's List--There's
not much that needs to be said here. It's a disturbing, hurting,
moving, and crying piece of art. If you think it's boring, you have
no heart. End of story.
Searching for Bobby Fischer--What--you
say you've never heard of it? That's okay--neither had I until I
saw it on HBO a few weeks ago. It's about chess. Yup. I can
see you starting to fall asleep right now. But more than that, it's
about people and life... all that great kind of stuff that we all secretly
love. It's just downright a beautiful thing. Plus it's got
this adorable little boy with the biggest eyes...
Harrison Bergeron--Another
one you haven't heard of? It's probably because it's a Showtime original
picture. (pretty amazing, considering.) This movie is loosely
based on the story by Kurt Vonnegut. It's basically a spectacular
movie (starring Sean Austin, no less!) about things like "the human spirit,"
and "the power of the individual" which sound cheezy when you talk about
them, but that come across so well in the movie that they make you bawl
your eyes out, and--best of all--really make you think.
Welcome to the Dollhouse--This
movie is one of those ones that are so brutally truthful that I almost
wish I didn't love it so much! It brings back all those painful memories
of Junior High, and how much we (admit it) all hated it. It's a little
rough--if you're under 14 or so, I wouldn't go see it, but for use jaded
old folks (tee hee), it's a not-so-great but funny flashback.
Legends of the Fall--Well,
first of all, half of what makes the movie for me is the soundtrack.
This has got to have some of the most beautiful instrumental stuff ever
written. Another 1/4 is probably due to the lure of Brad Pitt. (Even
us sane and reasonable girls can't resist sometimes.) But that final
quarter is wholly and entirely due to the quality of the movie. It
is totally epic, totally romantic, and totally a bucket crying tearjerker.
Twelfth Night--Yes, it's
Shakespeare. Now, don't you start groaning at me, it really is good!!
It just happens to be one of his comedies, which means it's a bit- well-
lighter than those gloom & doom tragedies. It's full of humor,
(And it's still funny a couple hundred years later!!) pathos, and endless
pitfalls. And, of course, it ends with a wedding. What more
could you want? Okay, so there is a little singing, too--but it's
decidedly tasteful. You'll like it, really!
Breakfast at Tiffany's--having
only seen this show all the way through once, I'm probably not the world's
biggest expert on it. But the two things that I can say with absolutely
no doubt are--Audrey Hepbury is truly spectacular, and this movie is a
work of genius. There are lines in there that just give me the shivers.
Another thing--people always complain about how kids today drink too much.
I say they should see this movie!! It was made in the 50's or 60's
and the main character is totally and completely trashed most of the way
through it! Tsk tsk!
A River Runs Through It--Yes,
it is another Brad Pitt movie. But this time, he has nothing to do
with it being on my list. This movie is beautiful. It has soul,
it has heart, it has tears, it has everything that is right and good.
Trainspotting Yeah, so
it's about drugs. So what? It's a great movie anyway, if a bit obscene.
This is another one that's not for the little kids, but if you're not a
little kid, than I say go for it.
TopQuotes
Reviews My least
favorite movies are:
The Nutty Professor--To
me, the comedy seems weak and crude, and there's nothing else there at
all to shore it up.
Anaconda--I have just
never seen a snake that acts that way. Never ever. Sorry, just
couldn't swallow it. (Bad pun.)
And if these happen to be
your favorite movies, that more power to ya. Don't bother to e-mail
me and complain, 'cause trust me, I'm not gonna change my mind.
