I am an American for 35 years, native of Switzerland, born in Olten,
Kanton Solothurn, the hub of the Swiss railroad system, the SBB-CFF.
Here all the main rail lines cross, east-west, south-north.
Before I was 17 I lived in Paris, France and Santander, Spain. At that
age I returned to Basel, Switzerland, to enter an internship of the hotel
profession. After 3 years at the Hotel Metropol on the Barfuesserplatz
and 2 years at 5 star Hotel Drei Koenige(built in 1180) I decided to
emigrate to Montreal, Canada, Here I worked at the famous Ritz Carlton
Hotel. After a couple of years, brushing with world celebrities there,
I applied and was hired by Canadian Pacific Airlines as a flight attendant.
They moved me to the beautiful west coast city of Vancouver, BC.
Here I met and married a girl from the Bernese Oberland.
These years in Vancouver are very memorable to me, my time spent
mostly on" Robson Strasse" the hub of german speaking immigrants.
with all it's German restaurants and delicatessen stores.
Today, all that has changed.
United States
In 1962, the year of the Seattle World's fair we decided to immigrate to
the USA, we got stranded in Portland, Oregon where we still live today.
We have 3 grown children, and 5 grandchildren My wife and I
are celebrating our 40th. Anniversary this year.
In Portland and a few other cities in Oregon, I worked as a restaurant and
hotel manager for Hilton, Sheraton and Red Lions. At age 54 I retired
to look after my own investments and I am a certified real estate and
travel agent. I always been very busy in my life trying to learn more about
this wondrous world, even as a 5 acre farmer, growing
charolais-whiteface beef.
I am a cancer survivor and enjoying my present hobbies, computers and
model railroading.
