Ontario Government
Compendium - Social Work and Social Services Work Act, 1998
The legislation, if passed, would promote public protection by providing a means to monitor and support excellence in social work and social service work. It would build upon recent government initiatives that enhance child protection and personal safety.
The establishment of the proposed College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers would fulfill the government's commitment to create a self- governing body that would set standards of practice and ethics, oversee professional qualifications and certification, maintain a registry of members, establish a public complaints process, discipline members for professional misconduct or incompetence, and coordinate ignoring professional education.
The proposed Act would bring Ontario in line with other provinces, all of which have social work legislation. The inclusion of both social workers and social service workers in the proposed College would place Ontario in a leading position with respect to professional recognition and regulation in this important human services sector. The proposed Act would confirm the vital role of social work and social service work in the province.
The proposed legislation would recognize that protecting the public is paramount by ensuring mandatory membership in the College for any person who wishes to use the title social worker or social service worker. The proposed College's primary duty would be to serve and protect the public interest.
The proposed College would be governed by a Council comprised of equal representation of social workers, social service workers, and the public.
