This afghan is more the size of a blanket or a bed coverlet. It completely covers the top of a full-sized bed. I made this for my youngest son for Christmas 2000 and I am thinking of cross-stitch "to" and "from" notation and the date he received it onto the afghan, as a memento.

Materials:
Red Heart Super Saver Worsted Weight Yarn (Soft White): 9 (8 oz) skeins
Red Heart Super Saver Worsted Weight Yarn (Black): 2 (8 oz) skeins
Red Heart Super Saver Worsted Weight Yarn (Pale Yellow): 4 (8 oz) skeins
Red Heart Super Saver Worsted Weight Yarn (Cherry Red): 1 (8 oz) skeins
Caron Sayelle Worsted Weight Yarn: 1 (3.5 oz) skein
Crochet hook size I/9/5.5MM

Stitch Notes (American):
Chain (ch)
Slip Stitch (sl st)
Single Crochet (sc)
Half Double Crochet (hdc)
Yarn Over (YO)
Beginning (beg)

Gauge: 7 sc = 2 inch; 3 rows (carrying over colors as in pattern) = 1 inch
Finished size = 5' x 6' (60" x 72")

Notes: Each row on chart is equal to 2 rows crocheted. Each square/block on chart is equal to 2 sc stitches. Always work over unused strand to carry it along in work. Rows are read from right to left on chart.

Additional Notes: To change colors, work a sc in the old color, then, pull the new color through the last two loops to complete that single crochet.

Chain 213.
Row 1 (on chart): With Soft White, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; ch 1, turn (212 sc). The row you are about to crochet now is still Row 1 on chart but when you crochet this "follow-up" row, read the chart from left to right.

Row 2 - 110 (on chart): Continue according to chart, making the first color change on Row 4. At the end of Row 110 on chart, cut all color except for blue. Fasten off (make sure you leave yourself at least 8 inches to sew in later. You don't want the afghan to come apart in the washing machine later). Turn afghan and begin edging.

(Note: after working Row 40 and its follow-up row, fasten off red color leaving an 8-inch length for sewing in later. After Row 64 and it's follow-up row, fasten off red color again leaving an 8-inch length for sewing in later.)

(Note: after working Row 54 and its follow-up row, fasten off blue color leaving an 8-inch length for sewing in later.)


EDGING
Rnd 1: Working across last row (top of afghan), ch 2, 4 dc in same st as ch-2, skip next st, (sl st in next st, ch 2, hdc in same st as sl st, skip next st) across to corner; ch 2, 4 dc in last st (you may have to fudge the number of skipped stitches here--I did) *wink*, skip next row on next side of afghan, (sl st in next row, ch 2, hdc in same row as sl st, skip next st) across to next corner. Continue remaining 2 sides to correspond and join with sl st in same place as beg ch-2. Fasten off and sew in all ends well with a large-eyed sewing needle.
