A member of the
reptile family, there are some 250 kinds of turtle found around the world,
and 48 species are in the United States. The turtle lives on the shore so
that it can have easy access to water; lakes, ponds, rivers and the ocean.
On the other hand, the tortoise is landlocked and can be found in most
environments.
Many Natives refer to North America as Turtle Island because their legends say that when the earth was covered with water, turtle dove to the bottom of the oceans bringing up earth on its back so that the people could have a safe and dry home. If you have turtle energy, you value both the power of the earth, the waters of the earth, and the magic of the heavens for turtle symbolizes both the grounding quality of earth energy, and the magic of the mystical. Using turtle energy can help you to achieve real balance in your life and your spirit so that you don't get "stuck in the mud".
Turtle people are loving and nurturing; the qualities of the great Earth Mother and the Goddess. They make haste slowly, being careful that their thoughts and plans are fully investigated and explored before being put into action. They take their time about things for they know there is no need to rush, for turtle is also the mark of longevity. They have much to teach about the wise use of time, and of our relationship to time. Are we slaves to the clock, or do we use the time we have wisely?
Learn about both adaptability and protection from turtle. It is "at home" anywhere because it carries its home on its back. It does not become attached to places, for it is free to search for new opportunities where ever they may be found. When they sense danger, or are in uncomfortable and insecure settings, they withdraw into their shell, and are protected. Are you secure enough with your own talents and sense of self that you have the courage to seek new and better things for yourself and those you love? Are you mindful of the need for protecting your own spirit until you are comfortable and knowledgeable about new people, circumstances and surroundings?
Turtle people are true survivors, and have sharply honed senses to assure their survival on both the physical and spiritual levels. They have acute hearing; they are very sensitive to vibrations; they have the gift of clairvoyance and the ability to develop other psychic and metaphysical senses.
Turtle is encouraging you to use your own head and heart to be all that you can be. Listen.
