THE GAINES FAMILY

Robert Gaines married Sarah ____________.  Sarah Gaines was born August 6,
1828, and died December 11, 1877.  She is buried in the Ramey Chapel Cemetery.

Robert and Sarah Gaines were the parents of the following named children:
1.  Anna Mae Gaines (see below)
2.  Mary Gaines.  Harrison County marriage records show the
     marriage of Mary C. Gaines to Edwin Arnold on February 18,
     1867, with the ceremony being performed by S.J. Whitaker.
3.  William A. Gaines, born June 23, 1858, died June 5, 1877.  He
     is buried in the Ramey Chapel Cemetery.
4.  Richard Gaines, born about 1861.  The 1900 census for Fleming
     County lists Richard Gaines and his family.  He was a
     peddler.  He was married to a woman named Nevia, who was born
     about 1862.

6.  Robert Henry Gaines married Phoebe A. Dodd in 1885 in Fleming
     County, Kentucky.
7.  J. Thomas Gaines, who married Ida B. Muse in Fleming
     County, Kentucky, in 1890.  At the time of their marriage, he
     was a teacher.  He later became a doctor.
 
Harrison County, Kentucky marriage records show a marriage of Robert B. Gaines and Jane McCarty for September 11, 1843.  I am not sure if this is the Robert Gaines mentioned above, or if Sarah Gaines could possibly be Sarah Jane McCarty.

Robert Gaines married Eliza J. Rankins on February 27, 1893 in Fleming County, Kentucky.  It was her second marriage, and she was 46 years old at this time.  Robert Gaines was listed as being 69 years of age, and being born in Harrison County, Kentucky, and his father being born in Virginia.  This was listed as his third marriage.
 

Anna Mae Gaines, born April 27, 1847 and died March 22, 1910, married William Henry Whalen, the son of William and Sarah Whalen, on November 17, 1863.  He was born April 12, 1843 and died May 30, 1924.  They are buried at the Ramey Chapel Cemetery in Fleming County, Kentucky.

1.  Mary (Mollie) Whalen, who married Weekliff Lucas in Fleming County,
     Kentucky, in 1882.
2.  Sarah Fannie Whalen, born 1867 and died 1945, married Daniel P. Caudill
     on October 2, 1886 in Fleming County, Kentucky.  Daniel Caudill was the
     jailer in Fleming County at one time.  He lived from 1864 to 1934.  They
     are both buried at the Ramey Chapel Cemetery in Fleming County,
     Kentucky.
3.  Malinda (Linn) Whalen married W. T. Gifford.  Her second husband was
     William Williams.
4.  Martha Jane Whalen, born May 5, 1871, and died in 1963, married Daniel
     Smalley.  Daniel Smalley was born in March, 1859, and died in 1937.
5.  William Riley Whalen, born October 1, 1872, died February 17, 1926,
     married Martha Nedra Crawford, who was born October 22, 1874, and died
     June 22, 1954.  They are buried in the Mays Lick Cemetery in Mason
     County, Kentucky.
6.  Robert Samuel Whalen married Elizabeth Thornsbury on October 8,
     1894.  He lived from January 20, 1876 to June, 1951.  Elizabeth Whalen
     was the daughter of Thomas and Ann McClanahan Thornsbury.  She lived
     from February 7, 1876 to August 30, 1964.
7.  Ladoga Whalen, known as Dodie, born 1879, married Richard McKee in
     Fleming County, Kentucky, on September 23, 1897.  She died prior
     to 1908.

9.  Vivian Mae Whalen, born May 14, 1887, and died January 10, 1968,
     married J. William Lantern in Fleming County, Kentucky.  After the death
     of William Lantern, Vivian Mae Lantern married Fleming Gulley in 1917 in
     Fleming County, Kentucky.  He lived from September 13, 1888 to
     September 8, 1959.  Fleming and Vivian Gulley are buried at the Muses
     Mills Cemetery in Fleming County, Kentucky.
 

John Preston Whalen, born August 6, 1885 in Fleming County, Kentucky, married Melinda Bell, the daughter of James and Rebecca Frances Bryant Bell, on April 25, 1905 in Fleming County, Kentucky, at the home of James Bell.  Melinda Bell Whalen was born February 11, 1883, in Harrison County, Kentucky.   John Whalen died February 13, 1959.  Melinda Whalen died on September 28, 1975.  They are both buried at the Wedonia Cemetery, Mason County, Kentucky.
