Just A Little History About The "JUNGLE EATERS"

Hello, this is Walter "MOP" Blake, I served with some of the best guys in the Engineers. We were called "JUNGLE EATERS". I guess that could be because we were with a landclearing unit that cut jungle and operated "ROME PLOWS". These were bulldozers and tank heavy diesel tractors equipped with extra sharp blades.
The "JUNGLE EATERS" has knocked down jungle in such enemy strongholds as Cambodia, the Ho Bo Woods, the Boi Loi Woods, and War Zone C just to mention a few. It was routine to find many enemy strongholds, hit land mines and be attacked on a daily bases. We even were attacked by the wildlife that lived in the jungles we cleared, such as bees and monkeys. Not to mention the fear and loneliness we felt.

Peace and Quite !......... NOT REALLY.
As you can see from the photo to the left, there were a few times that things were kind of quite for us. Yet we stayed alert and ready to roll. This is called a NDP, a Night Defensive Parameter, this is when we would build berms (mounds of dirt) in a big circle and park our equipment inside for the night. This was to help protect us from the enemy. As we all know it did not always work, however it did give us a small sence of safety and we could sort of let our guard relax but never down as we never knew when the next attack would hit.

On The Road Again........
This is just another day in our lives with the "JUNGLE EATERS". Traveling from one area to the next was as much a part of our duty as the actual landclearing. If we weren't hitting landmines or getting attacked we could see a lot of pretty country. Yet it was so deadly. Even in all the hardships there were many friendships made and this is one of my ways to help brother Bill find as many of our lost brothers as possible. You will find his link below. If you or anyone you know served with our unit above PLEASE contact me, (e-mail below) or Bill Kimbrell at playground@carol.net. We have been able to find a few of them but still have a long way to go.
