| 1. Greatest Fish on Earth For years, we have known that Shark is a splendid hunter - the perfect eating machine - free from the normal ravages of sickness, an almost indestructible creature in its own environment. It is considered by many scientists as amazingly healthy. Even its most massive wounds heal quickly and free of infection. Part of the secret lies in shark's immune system, which contains antibodies that can successfully combat a vast array of foes - not just bacteria or viruse, but also chemicals that could cause cancer in human beings. Indeed, sharks are among the few anumals on earth that almost never get cancer. |

| A world renowned biochemist, Dr. Carl Luer at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, USA, tried feeding nurse sharks with one of the most potent carcinogens, called aflatoxin, found in the most of corn, peanuts and other field crops. In nearly eight years of research and concentrated effort, he was not able to product a single tumor in any of the sharks. But its immune system is only part of shark's arsenal in the prevention of cancer formation. The most powerful weapon has been proved to be its unusual skeleton which is extremely rich in potent anti-angiogenesis factors and biological response modifiers (BRMs). They are also found in other mammals, but only in very small amount. Shark's skeleton system, on the other hand, is unique, in that it is made up entirely of cartilage. The potent anti-angiogenesis factors and BRMs are believed to be protein molecules, acidic mucopolysaccharide complex containing protein, denatured collagen, and non-protein glycosaminoglycans, including chondroitin sulfate A,B and C respectively. M.I.T.researchers found shark cartilage 1,000-1000,000 times more potent against cancer than that from other animals. It is further found that cartilage can significantly boost the immune system of users in fighting against infections and ageing. It is being investigated as a supplement in the treatment of some of the fatal symptoms of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Physicians are now using shark cartilage either by itself or as an adjunct to orthodox treatment in arthritis and inflammatory diseases. Studies done at the University of Miami Medical School on arthritis patients demonstrated the effectiveness of shark cartilage in markedly reducing pain and inflammation without side effects of any kind. |
