First Generation

1. Thomas¹ Phelps, Jr., son of Thomas Phelps and Elizabeth Patterson, was born in Henrico Co., VA circa 1725. Thomas died March 5, 1797 in Bullitt Co., KY, at 71 years of age.

He married Sarah Guy. Sarah was the daughter of George Guy and Lucy Moore. Thomas Phelps, Jr. and his family moved to Boonesborough in 1778 from Virginia. He was living in Jefferson County, VA (now KY) in 1784.

7. Josiah² Phelps (Thomas¹) was born Buckingham Co., VA February 11, 1755. Josiah died June 17, 1835 in Madison Co., KY, at 80 years of age. His body was interred in Madison Co., KY.

He married four times. He married Mrs. Martha (Cameron) Massey. He married Elizabeth Patterson 1774. Elizabeth died circa 1783. He married Susannah Simmons in Beargrass, Jefferson Co., VA (now KY), February 5, 1785. Susannah was born 1763. Susannah was the daughter of Samuel Simmons and Verlinda Willett. He married Mrs. Mary (Collins) Barr in Fayette Co., KY, June 10, 1822. According to the book "Madison County: 200 Years in Retrospect", Josiah Phelps arrived at Boonesborough in 1776. He served in the Revolutionary War under Gen. George Rogers Clark and lived in Louisville (then called Beargrass) for a time before settling on his 1,400 acre land grant in Madison County, KY.

Josiah Phelps and Elizabeth Patterson had the following children:

12. Susanna³ Phelps (Josiah², Thomas¹) was born in Jefferson Co., KY December 25, 1785. Susanna died September 10, 1843 in Madison Co., KY, at 57 years of age. Her body was interred in Richmond Cemetery, Richmond, KY.

She married William Chenault in Madison Co., KY, October 14, 1802. William was born in Albemarle Co., VA October 2, 1773. William was the son of William Chenault and Elizabeth Mullins. William died June 19, 1834 in Madison Co., KY, at 60 years of age. His body was interred in Richmond Cemetery, Richmond, KY. William represented Madison County in the state legislature in 1822.
