The [Rail] Road to Scotland

Our journey begins here, inside King's Cross Station in London.

We rode the Great North Eastern Railway to Edinburgh. We thought it best to get out in Edinburgh and do some sightseeing before continuing on to Falkirk, the station nearest to Laura's great uncle's house.

The conductor came along to take our tickets.

We rode through the peaceful English countryside.

This is pretty typical of the countryside that we saw in England, farms and villages.

The trip from London to Edinburgh is about five hours, so after a while we were bound to get hungry. Luckily there was a diner car. It wasn't a sit-down kind of diner. They just had sandwiches, and food that you could take back to your seat.

Here Laura comes back with her lunch, a ham sandwich.

I had gone up a few minutes before. I wanted to try something new, and thought that the hot Cumberland sausage sandwich sounded like a winner. So that's what I had for lunch. I liked it quite well.

The train made about four quick stops along the way. This is a glimpse of Newcastle when we stopped there.

We passed through a lot of interesting looking places on the way to Edinburgh. I wished that we could have had more time, and the opportunity to just hop out and explore places along the way that looked interesting. I guess that if we had done that, it would have taken at least a week to get to Laura's great uncle's house.

As we approached the Scottish border, the railroad tracks paralleled the North Sea. There I saw this serene seaside village.

Like I said earlier, it would have been great to be able to stop the train and hop out at each and every place that looked enticing.
