York

The train between London and Edinburgh passes through the old city of York. We had planned our schedule such that we would have enough time to step out and see some of the sites there as we passed through.

The city of York is an ancient one. It was known to the Vikings as Jorvik. An old wall surrounds much of the city. It is still in good condition and is open to the public for walking.
The train station stands just outside of the old wall. We walked through one of the portals and up onto the wall. From there we caught our first glimpse of the heart of the old city.
We walked into the city's market square and looked around. Here we found a caliope that played music and put on puppet shows.
There were several well-known stores in the market as well.
The most prominent feature of the York skyline is the cathedral known as the York Minster.
A view inside of the York Minster.
Detail of some of the statuary inside.
A fun place to visit in York is this street known as the Shambles. It is a street dating back hundreds of years. It is full of shops that cater to tourists, but it is quite an interesting stroll.

The thing about the street that I find most interesting is that at the head of the street the buildings have settled and tend to tip a bit.

Here you can see the difference in spacing on the buildings between the top and the bottom.
