Weaving My Dream

My Garden

Kahlil Gibran once wrote that he discovered the secrets of the sea by meditating on a dew drop.   I'd like to tell you that I've discovered the secrets of life by meditating on my garden but I can't. I can tell you that I have discovered that there are no secrets.

After years of digging in the dirt, nurturing plants and listening to the music of growing things that I don't believe there are any secrets.   Our Creator put it all out in the open, no secrets.

"To many, the perfume of flowers has more meaning than their outward beauty. In it they feel the spirit and eternity of the flowers." Alice Lounsbury was mostly right when she wrote this in her book Gardens Near The Sea in 1910.

daisy4.gif (235 bytes)The "spirit and eternity" of life is grasped in the scent of flowers.  Cherished (and not so cherished) memories, long forgotten, are instantly renewed and relived with the same intensity of emotions and physical reactions when we catch even the faintest whiff of certain flowers from our past.tulips.gif (3447 bytes)

Louise Beebe Wilde wrote in The Fragrant Path (1932), "Physicians might in mine opinion draw more use and good from odours than they do."

Whenever I see a Lilac bush in bloom I do everything in my power to get close enough to take in a deep breathe of scent. As the breathe is slowly drawn I am filled with memories of growing up in Colorado. I see my Grandma and Grandpa in their garden, my Nana serving sweet rice pudding and my cousins running around the house, scaring each other and laughing.

What memories become alive for you when you smell the clovelike scent of carnations or sweet richness of stock?  Do you remember that first kiss...the first time you held hands...What does the richness of Hyacinth or jasmine   make you recall....?

"I prefer to be a dreamer among the humblest with visions to be realized than to be lord among those without dreams & desires"Kahlil Gibran  grdvert.gif (451508 bytes)    At times I might grumble and growl about working in the yard, complaining of weeds and broken nails, snails and late frosts but it is only to draw the attention to the sanctuary that I call my garden..

It is a pleasant refuge, filled with life and energy. It is an excellent place to talk to God and an even better place to listen.

There are times when sitting in the midst of the flowers, trees, vines and bees I become overwhelmed with the beauty of life. How marvelous that our Creator has given us the opportunity to participate in Creation.

How many of us have picked a daisy from the garden or plucked one out of a bouquet to make use of its prophetic characteristics?  Did you know that many a young girl has closed her eyes, plucked several stems of daisies and counting the blooms on the stems believed she had learned how many years before she will marry?flwr3bar.gif (2501 bytes)

When you walk in my garden there are several fairies and even a gnome who reside there. It's fun to listen and look for them. Sometimes the fairies hide my trowel in the violets but the gnome likes to lay on his tummy next to the pond and watch the fish.
