With the success of Disneyland, Walt Disney began to look for land to build an East Coast Disneyland. He eventually found it in Orlando, Florida. He had plans for a park just like Disneyland that would include many resort amenities around it. But Walt Disney's real dream for this East Coast Disneyland would be EPCOT, Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. A city that would feature the highest innovations in technology. "It would be a living blueprint of the future," as Walt Disney once said.
Eventually the Florida site was given a name, Disney World. After Walt Disney's death it was changed to Walt Disney World, to show it was Walt Disney's dream. Construction began in October of 1965. By 1971 it was complete. On opening day of October 1, 1971, The Magic Kingdom, The Contemporary Resort, and The Polynesian Resort were all open. Walt Disney World eventually began getting thousands of visitors and was expanded with more hotels, The Disney Village, River Country, and Discovery Island. In 1982 EPCOT Center was opened (the word Center was dropped in 1994.) Although it wasn't Walt Disney's original dream of a city, it still had the same concept. In 1989 The Disney-MGM Studios were opened. Now in 1998,most recently the 4th gate was opened, Disney's Animal Kingdom. Of course it won't stop here, as long as there are people with imaginations, Walt Disney World will forever continue to grow.
