Introduction

These pages are designed to aid scouts in preparing for and passing requirements for scout progress badges. Please note that these are not the final authority on Badge Tests, the examiner is the final judge, please direct any questions to your examiner. Standing instructions apply in all cases. The testing requirements are set by the Rover Unit, the main testing board of the Group and the following are what they have to say on the Scout Progress Badge Tests.  Captions in bullets or italics are changes or additions to the testing requirements set by the Singapore Scout Association.

To sit for the test for the second level of any topic, he has to have passed the previous level for that topic, ie. to sit for Cooking (2), you must have passed Cooking (1).

World Scout Badge
Cadet Scouts moving up to the Scout Section should continue wearing the badge and only have to renew their Scout Promise.

1.

Promise and Law
  • Be able to recite and write out the Scout Promise and Scout Law in English or Chinese
  • Be able to discuss understanding of the Scout Promise and the Scout Law
  • Know the Scout Mottos

2.

Salute
  • Know how to make the Scout Salute in any circumstance
  • Know the significance and meaning of the Scout Salute
  • Know when to use the Scout Salute and the Left-Handshake

3.

Uniform
  • Know how to wear the Scout uniform smartly and correctly.
  • Know where badges should be worn
  • Know improvisational uses of the Scout Uniform

4.

Ceremonies
  • Know the procedure of the formal opening and closing ceremonies of the Scout Unit
  • Be able to execute and follow the handsign drill

5.

Knowledge of the Scout Movement
  • Know the brief history of World Scouting and Scouting in Singapore
  • Know the brief history of Dunman High Scout Group

Scout Standard Badge

1.

National Flag, Anthem and Pledge
a) Know the meaning of the various symbols and colours of the National Flag
  • Know the meaning of the various symbols and colours of the Group Flag
b) Explain the meaning of the National Anthem
  • Know the brief history of the National Anthem and be able to sing it correctly
  • Know translations of the National Anthem
  • Know the meanings of the colours and symbols in the Singapore Coat of Arms
c) Have an understanding of the Pledge and explain how a Scout can do his part as a citizen in keeping the Pledge

2.

First Aid (1)
  • For a) and b) below, either hold the Basic First Aid certificate of St John's Ambulance Brigade or sit for a test.
a) Pack a patrol first aid kit
The first aid kit should contain, other than basic necessities of a first aid kit, medication and dressings to treat the following:
  • Fever
  • Fainting
  • Cuts and Wounds
  • Diarrhoea
  • Cramps

It should not have expired medication.

b) Be able to treat simple wounds, fainting, unconsciousness, burns and scalds.

3.

Cooking (1)
a)  Be able to light a fire outdoors using firewood and matches
  • No satay sticks, leaves or branches allowed
  • Firewood has to be prepared beforehand
  • A proper hole must be dug
b) Cook a simple meal for yourself with utensils using firewood
  • Be able to use the above fire to cook a simple meal of instant noodles
c) Be able to operate a gas stove.
  • Know the workings of a gas stove
  • Know how to use it safely

4.

Knots (1)
Be able to tie and explain the uses of the following:-
  1. thumb knot
  2. figure of eight knot
  3. reef knot
  4. sheet bend
  5. clove hitch
  6. sheep shank
  7. timber hitch
  8. round turn and two half hitches
  9. marlinspike knot
  10. square lashing
  11. diagonal lashing

Camp (1)
a) Pitch and strike a 4-men hiker's tent with another candidate
  • Be able to pitch a hike tent with another candidate in 10 minutes.  This tent is expected to be near perfect.  Please practise before sitting for this test.

b) Know how to pack a rucksack efficiently for a hike and for a weekend outdoor camp.
  • Be able to pack a rucksack for a 3 days - 2 nights hike
  • Items should be properly waterproofed, preferably using ziplock bags
  • All equipment must be serviceable
  • Examinees will be expected to layout equipment for inspection, they will also be expected to be able to pack everything back in the correct arrangement
  • Know the proper hornet drill

6.

Exploration (1)
a) Have a knowledge of Highway and Country Codes
b) Know the theory on Map and Compass, including Grid References, Scale and Signs, Symbols and Colours in Maps, Compass Bearing s and Directions, Set a Map.

7.

Drill (1)
Be able to execute basic stationary drill:
  1. senang diri
  2. rehatkan diri
  3. sedia
  4. ke-kanan pusing
  5. ke-kiri pusing
  6. ke-belakang pusing
  • Candidates are to be in smart uniform and beret

8.

Tracking Symbols
  • Be able to recognise tracking symbols and know their meaning
  • Be able to write tracking symbols to convey a message

Advanced Scout Standard Badge

1.

Raise and Lower Flag
Be able to raise and lower a flag during a unit meeting or at school.
  • Please inform tester before the regular flagstaff is dismantled
  • Standard procedures for raising and lowering the flag will be tested

2.

Swim 50m
Be able to swim 50m using any stroke without difficulty. (alternative permissible only on medical grounds)

3.

Outdoor Precautions
Know the proper precautions to take in two outdoor land and one sea activities
  • Emphasis on important safety precautions over and above the basic requirements
  • Basic requirements must also be known

4.

First Aid (2)
  • For a) and b) below, either pass the Basic First Aid Certificate of the St John's Ambulance Brigade or sit for a test.
a) Know the symptoms and treatment for:
  1. shock
  2. animal, snake and insect bites
  3. poisoning
b) Be able to tie simple bandages and arm slings

5.

Cooking (2)
Prepare a full course meal (balanced diet) for 2 Scouts without using utensils
  • Candidate must have passed Axes, Parangs and Knives segment of the Advanced Scout Standard before sitting for this test.
  • Improvised utensils are allowed

6.

Knots (2), Lashings, Splicings and Whippings
1) Demonstrate the following and explain their uses:
  1. rolling hitch
  2. bowline
  3. fireman's chair knot
  4. surgeon's knot
  5. highwayman's hitch
  6. scaffold hitch
  7. square lashing - a higher standard than Knots (1) will be expected
  8. diagonal lashing - a higher standard than Knots (1) will be expected
  9. figure of 8 lashing
  10. simple whipping
  11. sail-maker's whipping
  12. back splice
2) With the assistance of your patrol, construct a flag staff of at least 15 ft (2 staves) for a unit meeting.
  • Not tested.  All Scouts will pass this segment at the end of sec. 2 unless in special cases.  This is because by end of sec 2, all scouts would have constructed a flag staff at least once when his patrol is on duty.

7.

Camp (2)
a) Go for an outdoor camp (under tentage) for at least 2 nights.
  • Have gone to either PLTC, Standard Camp or Survival Camp
b) Pitch a 8-12 men ridge tent with a patrol of 6 boys
  • Either a patrol of 6 pitch a 8 men tent or a patrol of 4 pitch a 6 men tent.
  • Completion is expected in 30 minutes.
  • Knowledge on construction of drainage systems is required.

8.

Exploration (2)
a) Explore your own District and draw a simple map showing the important landmarks and amenities.  It should cover about 2-3 km in radius.
  • Any urban area in eastern Singapore can be examined
b) Go on a overnight hike as a companion for a test candidate
  • Have gone on any hike organised by our group, excluding bicycle hikes or have gone to a hike as a companion for a test candidate who is taking exploration for First Class Scout Badge and above

9.

Drill (2)
Be able to execute mobile drill in a contingent or attain the Footdrill Proficiency Badge Certificate
  • The whole set of drill commands will be tested

10.

Service (1)
a) Participate in at least one community service project organised by your Unit, District or HQ
b) Perform some household chores on a regular basis for at least 3 months. This must be verified by a parent or guardian
  • b) not tested.

11.

Axes, Parangs and Knives
  • Be able to list out a minimum of 5 important safety precautions when using any of the above
  • The above tools are to be in good condition when taking the test, please sharpen and de-rust before the test
  • Knowledge on maintenance of the tools will be tested
  • Knowledge on the tools will be tested
  • Usage of the tools will be tested
  • Ability to sharpen a pencil or peel an apple with a scout knife will be tested, please practise this.

12.

Lion Dance
  • Be able to play the cymbals for a simple lion dance performance
  • Have followed the lion dance troupe on at least 2 different occasions when the troupe goes out to perform
