1879 August 8: Robert Holbrook Smith born

 

1989 Bob graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy

 

1902 Graduated from Dartmouth College

 

1910 Won M.D. degree at Rush University

 

1912 Dr. Bob started medical practice, in Akron

 

1915 January 25: married Anne Ripley

 

1933 Dr. Bob began going to Oxford Group meetings to cope with his alcoholism

 

1935 May 12: Dr. Bob met Bill Wilson

 

June 10: Dr. Bob's last drink; start of A.A.

 

1937 Prospects came to Akron from Cleveland

 

November: Dr. Bob and Bill realized "chain reaction" had begun; Akron A.A.'s agreed on need for book

 

1939 Alcoholics holding meetings in Detroit;

November-December: Akron A.A.'s broke away from Oxford Group, began meeting at Dr. Bob's house

 

1940 January: Akron group found new home at King School

September: first meeting of Toledo A.A. group

 

1941 March 1 Saturday Evening Post: article on A.A.

 

Cleveland A.A.'s celebrated Doc Smith Day

 

1942 Dr. Bob and Bill accused of making undue profit on Big Book

 

1948 December: Dr. Bob's last major talk, in Detroit

 

Summer: Dr. Bob found he had cancer retired from practice

 

1949 March: Dr. Bob considered idea of A.A. conference premature

 

June 1: Anne Ripley Smith died

 

1950 July 28-30: First A.A. International Convention in Cleveland; Dr. Bob made last appearance at large A.A. gathering, joined other A.A.'s in approving 12 Traditions

 

November 16: Dr. Bob died

 

December Grapevine: article (prepared earlier) signed by both Bill and Dr. Bob recommended establishment of A.A. general service conference

 

1971 January 24: Bill died

 

1988 October 5: Lois Burnham Wilson died
