Dallyhaap,

The clown who lost his red nose©

Once upon a time, there lived a happy clown named Dallyhaap.

Dallyhaap was a magic clown, who lived only to make children laugh.

He had a special, red nose, where he kept all of his Clown Magic.

When Dallyhaap took his red nose off at night, he no longer had the frizzy clown hair and painted clown face. He looked just like everybody else.

But, when Dallyhaap put his red nose back on the next morning, he was Dallyhaap the Clown once more!

At the circus, all of the children would laugh and clap at his crazy tricks and funny faces. He did cartwheels. He rode a uni-cycle. He even did magic tricks!

When Dallyhaap was sleeping one night, a little mouse crept into his room. It was Biscuit the Mouse. He lived in a little hole behind the clothes closet.

Biscuit would always look around the house for useful things to take home.

He found a matchbox in the kitchen, which he used to make a little bed. The cotton he found in the bathroom cabinet was perfect for the bedding. For blankets, he used some pieces of cloth he discovered in the clown's scrap bag.

That night, while he was hunting around, Biscuit spotted Dallyhaap's red nose on the bedside table.

"Oooh!" said Biscuit with a squeak. "What's that shiny, red thing up there?"

He crawled right up the bed, ever so quietly, so he wouldn't wake the sleeping clown.

When he got to the table, Biscuit inspected the nose. It was nice and soft and squooshy!

This would make a great little chair--like a bean bag chair, thought Biscuit.

He snatched it right up and scampered back down to his hole.

The next morning, when Dallyhaap woke up, he stretched his arms and yawned. He was still a little tired, but he had plenty of children to make happy.

The first thing he did every morning, was to put on his red nose to become a clown.

But it wasn't there! Dallyhaap's red nose wasn't on his bedside table! What was he going to do?

Maybe it rolled off during the night, he thought. So, he looked under the table and under the bed. He even under the rug! No red nose.

Poor Dallyhaap started to weep. "Boo, hoo, hoo! Boo, hoo, hoo! I've lost my red nose."

Biscuit heard someone crying. He was inside his hole behind the clothes closet, sitting in his new chair.

"That must be the nice clown who lives in the house," said Biscuit, scratching his head. "I wonder why he's crying..."

The little mouse scampered quickly out of his hole and up the bed.

"Squeak, squeak!" said Biscuit, to get Dallyhaap's attention. Then he asked, "Why are you crying, Mr. Clown?"

"Oh, hello there little mouse. I'm crying because I lost my special, red nose," replied Dallyhaap.

Oh no! thought Biscuit. That's where I've seen my red chair before! On Mr. Clown's face! That's why he doesn't look like a clown yet.

"Don't cry, Mr. Clown," said Biscuit. "I know where to find your red clown nose."

"You do?" asked Dallyhaap. "Where?" The clown stopped crying because he was so happy.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Clown," said Biscuit. He lowered his little head, because he was sad about making Dallyhaap cry. "I took your nose."

"You did? But what would a mouse want with my red clown nose?"

"Oh, I didn't know that it was your nose. I thought it would make a nice chair!" said Biscuit. Then, he and Dallyhaap both started to laugh. After all, it was such a silly thing.

Biscuit the mouse scurried down the bed and to his home to fetch Dallyhaap's clown nose. When he got back to the bed, the clown put his nose on and suddenly he turned into Dallyhaap the Clown!

"Wow!" cried Biscuit. "Now, that's how I remember you."

"Thank you so much little mouse," said Dallyhaap. He patted the mouse gently on the head. Biscuit was glad he could help.

"My name is Biscuit," the mouse told him.

"My name is Dallyhaap," said the clown. "Thank you again for returning my nose."

"You're welcome," said Biscuit, "But I should be thanking you for not getting angry with me."

Without saying a word, Dallyhaap started to smile a big smile. He reached his index finger up to his face, poked his nose, and then poked the Mouse's nose with the same finger.

POOF! A red nose appeared right in front of Biscuit. His very own red nose!

"Oh boy!" shouted Biscuit. "Now I have a nose just like yours! Thank you so much Dallyhaap. you're the nicest person I've ever met."

"You can use your clown nose as a comfy chair," Dallyhaap told Biscuit. "And, it has a little magic in it, too. If you ever need me, just poke your red nose and say my name."

"Oh, thank you," Biscuit said one more time. Then, he scurried back to his home behind the clothes closet. It was time for Dallyhaap to get ready for the circus. He had lots of boys and girls to make laugh and smile with his tricks.

Biscuit and Dallyhaap were the best of friends from then on, and Dallyhaap never lost his red nose again. Although, he was sure he'd put some cotton in the bathroom cabinet, but it was gone. . .
