Almost Time For Snow:

It was wintertime, and Mr. Butterfield T. Mouse wanted his feet to stay warm and dry. He needed a new pair of boots. His old boots had too many holes in them.

Luckily, it hadn't snowed yet. The Weathermouse said it was going to snow in just two days. Mr. Mouse had to get new boots right away.

On the way to the shoe store, Mr. Mouse met up with Molly Mouse. Molly lived just down the road, in a white house with a white picket fence out front. She had beautiful flowers out front, and a little garden out back.

"Hello Molly," said Mr. Mouse. "How are you today?"

"Hello Mr. Mouse," said Molly Mouse. "I'm fine, thank you. Where are you going?"

"I'm going to buy some new boots," replied Mr. Mouse. "It's almost ready to snow."

"I believe the Weathermouse said it was going to snow in just two days," said Molly Mouse. "So, I'm going to live with my grandmother in the south."

"It will certainly be warmer there, Molly!"

"Yes, it will. Take care, Mr. Mouse."

"Have a nice winter, Molly. And say hello to your grandmother for me."

"I will, Mr. Mouse."

They each said good-bye, and Mr. Mouse walked to town. His long scarf was blowing in the breeze behind him. Yes, the snow would be here soon.

Marvin's Shoe Shop:

Mr. Mouse arrived at the shoe store in town. Old Marvin Mouse ran the store with his family. Mr. Mouse looked at the boots in the window. They were all handsome boots, but not the ones he wanted.

Marvin Mouse greeted Mr. Mouse at the door. He always had a smile for anyone who came to his store.

"What can I do for you today, my friend?" he asked.

Mr. Mouse told Marvin Mouse that he needed a new pair of boots. He looked at every pair of boots in the shop, but he didn't see any boots that he liked.

"Whatever shall I wear," Mr. Mouse asked.

Just then, he saw a pair of blue boots in the corner of the store.

"Aha! There they are!" he shouted. "Those are the best boots I've ever seen!"

"But those are old boots," said Marvin Mouse. "Nobody wanted to buy them, so I was going to put them in the garbage."

"You can't throw them away! I love those blue boots," said Mr. Mouse. He ran over to the boots to look at them. These boots were certainly not garbage.

"Blue is my favorite color and they're just my size too."

"You may buy them if you want," said Marvin Mouse, "for only one dollar."

Mr. Mouse thought that was a great price. He gave Marvin a dollar. Then he sat down to try on his new boots.

"They fit!" he shouted happily. "My new, blue boots fit."

Mr. Mouse was so glad that he had found some good boots.

"Thank-you very much," he said to Marvin Mouse, and then he left for home.

The Missing Boots:

At home, Mr. Mouse put his new boots in his room.

"As soon as it snows," thought Mr. Mouse, "I'll be able to wear them."

The next day was cleaning day. Mary Mouse, the cleaning mouse, came to do a little cleaning. Mr. Mouse decided to go grocery shopping while Mary worked. He liked to stay out of her way.

At the store he bought lots of food for the winter. He liked to walk to town, but he would rather walk in the woods. Now that he had new boots, he could walk every day.

When Mr. Mouse got home, he wanted to look at his new boots again. The whole house was all nice and clean. Mary always did a great job.

Mr. Mouse went into his room right away to find his boots. He looked, but his boots were gone!

"Oh no, my boots are missing!" he cried.

Where did they go? What was he going to do? Mr. Mouse's new, blue boots were gone!

He looked in every room of the house. He looked under the bed. He looked in the clothes hamper. He even looked in all of his closets. He still couldn't find his new, blue boots!

Mr. Mouse wasn't happy any more. What could have happened to his boots?

Mary To The Rescue:

Just then, Mary Mouse walked in. Mr. Mouse asked her about his boots.

"I can't find them. Did you see them?"

Mary knew just where to look.

"My new blue boots!" Mr. Mouse exclaimed. "I looked for them everywhere. How did you know where to look?" asked Mr. Mouse.

"I put them on the shelf in your closet," said Mary Mouse.

"But I looked in my closet," Mr. Mouse told her.

Mary smiled.

"They were up top, behind a box. I thought they were your old boots."

She apologized, but Mr. Mouse was smiling.

"That's okay," said Mr. Mouse. "They were old at the store, but they're new for me. I see they do need a little cleaning."

"I'd be happy to help you," Mary offered.

"No thank you, Mary. I will clean them myself."

So, Mr. Butterfield T. Mouse cleaned up his blue boots himself. They looked just like new when he was done. He wore them all winter, and they lasted him a long time.

"I'm glad Marvin Mouse didn't throw you away," he told his boots.

And that was the only time Mr. Mouse talked to his boots.
