Here's an experiment you can try. (And find a lesson from the Lord)
Take a clear bottle that will hold a little more than two cups.
The narrower the better (a graduated cylinder being best).
Use a measuring cup and add two cups of water to the bottle.
Mark the level on the bottle and then empty it out.
Next, measure in one cup of water, and then one cup of rubbing alcohol.
Check the level.
It should be two cups right?
WRONG! In this case 1+1 does not equal 2. It will be something less.
What happens here is
the water and alcohol molecules have a stronger affinity for each other
(draw together more closely) than they have for their own.
Kind of remind you of a few things?
Two can live as cheaply as one.
Opposites attract while likes repel.
So what is this law of affinity?
Is it a spiritual principle?
Is this how love draws us, affinity?
What is affinity?
It is a hidden force that causes things to be attracted to each other
Often times unlike things
It causes them to hold together more closely than likes
The best example of this can be seen in marriage
Men and women
While friends of the same sex can be close
the closest bond comes with a member of the opposite sex
Affinity, what does it do?
Not only does it draw together it also causes intimacy
a tightly involved relationship
Now what does all this have to do with the Lord?
{12:32} And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
John 12:32
We who are dead in our sins are drawn to life
We who are evil are drawn to good
We who have not the Spirit are drawn by the Spirit
We who know not love are drawn to love
Ever notice that it is the man who
sees he doesn't have the attributes of Christ
that is drawn to Christ
Ever notice it is the man who
believes he has the attributes
that is repelled
Affinity drawing together
