The morning news was filled with death
in fact during the first several minutes
EVERY story dealt with some tragic death
and for the remainder of the broadcast
nearly every story dealt with tragedy
I thought to myself 'what a cruel and ugly world'
As I drove to work I thought about all the problems in the world
war, hunger, hate, crime, poverty, murder, rape, lying
and these are just the things people do to each other
what about the things we do to ourselves
alcoholism, drug abuse, sexual perversions, over eating
and I thought what a terrible world
Then as I came over the bridge
I saw a most beautiful sunrise
the sun itself could not be seen,
hidden by the horizon
the clouds were lit up in layers
of fiery burnt orange, mauve, red and gold
and the lights in the chemical plants
looked like little sparkling diamonds
As I drove alongside the canal
the scene became even more beautiful
the still waters perfectly mirrored
both the sky and the features of the plants
What contrast how ugly man can make this world
how beautiful he can be in it
Suddenly a revelation hit me
When we can't resolve our own problems
that's when we bring tragedy upon ourselves
that's when we turn to hate and crime
that's when we turn to drugs and sex
we begin looking for an escape
Many in the world think turning to Jesus
is just another escape in a perverse way
they are right but there is a significant difference
In Him it is freedom we find
When we let Jesus show us the way
tragedy is never the result
instead we find our proper place
and we have real freedom
Ironic, the very think that set's us free
is often the thing people think enslave them
and the very thing they think set's them free
(their own ability to reason)
is often the thing that does enslave them
This world will be a beautiful place
when we learn our place in it
perhaps it's too simple for some
to just Let Jesus show us the way
After all, who would know the answers better than God
Perhaps the bridge and the sunrise were symbolic
a place where we see His light
and the promise of a new dawn
with God hidden just beyond the horizon
