Just Keep Swimming

Sometimes you may feel as if the whole world is caving in on you. You can't see the end of this ordeal. Resolution looks impossible and no hope is in sight. That's when you just have to keep on keeping on. If that's you today, maybe this story will be encouragement to you......

A marine fell overboard off his ship on patrol in the Persian Gulf. As his ship sailed out of view our marine knew it would be a long while before anyone came looking for him. It was early evening and roll call was not until the next morning. He would not be discovered missing until then. Once discovered missing a ship wide search would be conducted, this might take several hours. By the time he was declared over board and a sea search began his ship had already moved several hundred miles. Finding him would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Marine survival training had taught our young man how to make a crude floatation device out of his pants. Taking them off he tied knots in the pant legs. He would inflate them by raising the opening up from behind his head and scooping air into them as he pulled the opening down towards the water in front of him. A motion he would repeat many times during this ordeal. He would gain perhaps 10 to 20 minutes of floatation with each scoop.

After more than two days in the water our marine was picked up by an Iranian fisherman. Eventually he made it home. When interviewed about his ordeal the marine was asked, "what did you think when you saw your ship sailing out of view, did you think you were going to drown?"

"No, I didn't think about drowning", came the young man's reply. "I just kept thinking about God, family, friends, and how I just had to keep swimming".

With no hope in sight, all rational chance of survival lost, against hope he hoped. And He stayed focused on the "Now Moment". He just kept swimming....
