The Extra Mile

When I was a child I read the novel, "To Kill A Mockingbird"
one line has stuck with me all this time

"You can't know a man till you've walked two miles in his shoes"
Until you have experienced what another has experienced how can you judge, how can you have understanding
I suspect God knows this, that is why "we have a high priest who can sympathize with us who was tempted in every way as we are"
God has walked in our shoes He has seen us through the eyes of Jesus He knows us but do we know Him
How often do we read scripture and the person we relate to is not Jesus Maybe we can imagine ourselves as one of the disciples but why not Him Can we relate to His frustration when He asks, "Where is your faith" Can we see His sense of rejection before the crowd when they are yelling "crucify him crucify him" Can we imagine looking down from the cross, do we hear ourselves say "forgive them Father"
Everyday we are presented opportunities to walk in Jesus' shoes There is no circumstance we face that He can not understand Every circumstance, every situation becomes a moment when we can know Him simply by walking in His shoes
Maybe we can't do it all the time maybe we can't do it well but the more we try to see through His eyes the more we will see like He does
So the next time you are angry or bitter, or hurt the next time you are tempted to strike out the next time you speak the next situation that occurs Imagine yourself looking through Jesus' eyes Walk the extra mile in His shoes, get to know Him Maybe you'll find yourself doing as He does

{5:38} Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 5:39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. {5:40} And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. {5:41} And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. {5:42} Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. {5:43} Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. {5:44} But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; {5:45} That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. Matthew 5:38-45
