Ever feel like you just can't get as close to
God as you'd like?
It's a common feeling
So what can we do about it?
Recognize it, but don't focus upon it
We need to learn to be
Hospitable to God
Hospitality leads to trust
and trust leads to fellowship
and fellowship is the closeness we're desiring
So how do we become hospitable to God?
Find ways to let Him in to your life!
We have this misconception that God stays at the church
or in our prayer closet
and if that's what we believe
that's what we'll have
but that's not what we want
Here's a list of some of the things I do to provide hospitality
place a Bible in every place you frequent
your night stand
coffee table
kitchen
you may not open it every day
but it will call you when you have an idle moment
get a calendar that has scripture on it
get a devotional, several even
stop and listen for at least a minute or two
whenever your changing channels and see someone preaching
listen to Christian radio
listen to teaching tapes when you mow
keep teaching tapes in your car and listen to them when you drive
What am I doing?
Exactly what God told Joshua to do
put God's word everywhere around you
The reason you feel bad about not being close to God
is you're not doing what you need to get close
maybe a better way to say it is like this
How do you eat an elephant?
One bite at a time
God's bigger than any elephant!
With God's word all around you
you'll be constantly snacking
a bite here, a bite there
next thing you know
You're FAT on God's word!
One other thing I like to do
and now I'm giving away the secrets to my writings
write down the words and phrases that keep coming up
I put them on the white board in my office
I used to keep them in a journal (a suggestion from a friend)
now what I write is my journal
it's also part of my fellowship, my closeness with God
You can do it
just don't get frustrated because you think you have
to read the whole Bible
in three weeks
it took me a year the first time
snack on the Word
it's good bread
and ASK questions of the Holy Spirit
it may take time
but it's good wine
