| My Great Grandfather was William Henry Van Wart. He was born in New York, we
believe in Westchester County. He came ot Maryland working on a ship in
1856/57.. He meet my Great Grandmother and stayed. He married Mary Jane
Morgan in 1857. He stated at the time he was born in 1820. My ggrandmother
was born in 1836. He also stated that he was the grandson of Issac Van Wart
one of the captors of Major Andre'. He died in 1903 and in his death notice
it talks about his grandfather but it also says that he was born in 1806 and
died at the age of 97. We checked into the Captors of Major Andre' and it
appears that he was captured by 2 different Issac Van Wart's on 2 separate
occasions. The first time was by 1st Lt. Issac Van Wart the uncle of the
second captor. Andre' was traded back to the English for prisoner's on that
occasion. The second time he was hung. We found a letter writtten by 1st
Lieutenant Issac Van Wart in 1820 in which he was asking for his benefits.
In the letter he said that two grandchildren lived with him. One a
grandaughter named Livilla age 13 and a grandson age 14 named Henry. We think
that this is our ggrandfather. We do not know the names of his parents and we
don't know why he and his sister were living with 1st Lt. Issac Van Wart and
his wife Amy. So we have not been able to make the connection. If anyone has
any information on Henry and Lavillia who were living with their grandparents
Issac and Amy Van Wart in the Town of Mount Pleasant County of Westchester in
NY. during the Revolution and after it they moved to Pittstown, Please contact
me. Any help would be appreciated. I have copies of the letters by Issac and his wife and the death notice of William Henry Van Wart. My Grandfather was named Joseph Eldred, but went by Van Wert not Van Wart as the rest of his brothers did. I will also include the names of my grandfather's siblings as a name may help make a connection to another family. The names of William Henry Van Wart's and Mary Jane's children were Abby Jane born 1858 William Webster born 1860 Mary Roberta born 1865 Thomas Asbury born 1867 Joseph Eldred born 1869 George Abraham born 1888 Edward Lee born 1874 |
