FIRST GENERATION

1. Abraham VAN WOERT Sr. was born on 24 Nov 1782 in Saratoga, Saratoga Co., NY. Calculated from age at date of death: 71 years, 8 months, 26 days. He died on 20 Aug 1854 in T/Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. He was a Farmer. He was buried in Pompey Hill Cemetery, Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. The Van Woert stone is located in the center back of the Pompey Hill Cemetery. He resided in T/Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. In both 1847 and 1852, Abraham Van Woert lived on lot 78 and owned 55 acres of land. The property was assessed at $850 in 1847 and $1,525 in 1852, resulting in a tax of $3.61 and $6.51, respectively. In Onondaga County maps made in 1852 and 1860, the Van Woert residence was shown on Kelly Road in Pompey. Abraham Van Woert, Sr. owned 58 acres of land in the Town of Pompey, including Lot 78.

The will of Abraham Van Woert, Sr. was dated August 11, 1854, and filed at the Onondaga County Surrogates Court Will Book J, p. 366. Additional probate records are available at the Surrogate's Office.

According to the Name Index to the History of Saratoga County, 1878, there were various individuals by the name of Van Woert/Wort/Wert in Saratoga County. One Abram W. Van Wert (p348) was listed as being a school commissioner in Saratoga County sometime between 1812 and 1843. Ann Eliza Van Wert was listed on p513.

Dr. A. W. Van Woert (p99) was listed as a deceased member of the Medical Society of Saratoga County in 1806, while Dr. Abram Van Woert was listed as a current member (with a post office address of Amity). There were listings for Eldert I Van Woert on p357; John Van Woert on p295; Peter VanWoert on p90. Also, there was an Elbert Van Wort on p351.

David VAN WOERT and Caty E. NLN (VAN WOERT) had the following children:

10 i. Eliza Jane VAN WOERT was born about 1838. She died on 13 Aug 1841. She was buried in Pompey Hill Cemetery, Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY.

8. Gitalida Eliza VAN WOERT. In 1854, Gitalida was residing in Keene, NH, with her husband (probate of Abraham Van Woert, Sr.'s will, 1854).

9. Jane VAN WOERT was born on 24 Nov 1824 in Saratoga, Saratoga Co., NY. She was born in 1825 in Saratoga Co., NY. She died on 13 May 1888 in T/Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. She was a Housewife. She was buried in Manlius Cemetery, Onondaga Co., NY.

She was married to Morgan Miller LEWIS (son of Benjamin DeLope LEWIS and Polly MILLER) before 1846. Morgan Miller LEWIS was born on 10 Aug 1816 in T/Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. He died on 12 Dec 1894. He was a sheep and cattle farmer in lots 32 and 33, Town of Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. Brothers Sanford Curtis Lewis and Morgan Miller Lewis operated a large cattle and sheep dealing business. He was buried in Manlius Cemetery, Onondaga Co., NY. Morgan Miller Lewis was raised in Pompey and became a large dealer in cattle and sheep. He was prominent in the local politics, serving as town assessor, inspector of elections, and justice of the peace, among other positions. Jane VAN WOERT and Morgan Miller LEWIS had the following children:

THIRD GENERATION

12. Benjamin Van Woert LEWIS was born on 7 May 1846 in T/Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. He died on 17 Feb 1941 in T/Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. He was buried on 19 Feb 1941 in Manlius Cemetery, Onondaga Co., NY. He was a school teacher and farmer in T/Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. He was educated in Cazenovia Seminary, Cazenovia, NY.

He owned a camp on Cayuga Lake, where he hunted and fished. The camp was named "Camp Onondaga" and it has been passed down through the family into the late-1990s.

He was married to Adelle Florine TAYLOR (daughter of Isaac TAYLOR and Betsey Maria BOWEN) on 10 Mar 1875. Adelle Florine TAYLOR was born on 2 Apr 1848 in Otselic, Chenango Co., NY. She was born on 2 Apr 1849 in Otselic, Chenango Co., NY. She died on 7 Mar 1925 in T/Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. She was buried on 11 Mar 1925 in Manlius Cemetery, Onondaga Co., NY. She was a Housewife. Benjamin Van Woert LEWIS and Adelle Florine TAYLOR had the following children:

Actually buried in the lawn of her parents' home on Oran-Delphi Road, Pompey, New York. A gravestone was put on the Lewis family plot at Manlius Cemetery. Aged 1 yr, 9 mo, 18 days.

13. John F. LEWIS was born on 25 Nov 1851. According to Pompey Our Town in Profile, John F. Lewis was 81 years old at death, making his birth year 1854. He died on 2 Feb 1935. He was buried in Oran Cemetery, Onondaga Co., NY.

He was married to Nettie BURDICK. Nettie BURDICK was born in 1852. She died on 6 Jul 1937. She was buried in Oran Cemetery, Onondaga Co., NY. John F. LEWIS and Nettie BURDICK had the following children:

FOURTH GENERATION

14. George Morgan LEWIS was born on 14 Mar 1876 in T/Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. He died on 24 Aug 1945 in Oran, Onondaga Co., NY. He was buried in Manlius Cemetery, Onondaga Co., NY. He was educated in Cazenovia Seminary, Cazenovia, NY. He was a general store proprietor in Oran, Onondaga Co., NY. The general store was located near the railroad depot in Oran. George M. Lewis ("GM") was a graduate of Cazenovia College and Central City Business Institute. He owned and operated a general store at Oran Station adjacent to the milk station; therefore doing a thriving business with the farmers who, in those days, hauled milk to the station. The store carried grocery staples, clothing and hardware. In addition, he sold lumber and farm machinery, kerosene and gasoline.

He was the founder and owner of the Lewis & Hall Telephone Co., which supplied the first telephone service to the Manlius area. Originally, the office and switchboard were in an annex to the general store, but later were moved to Manlius.

He was an active Mason and a Shriner, and served the community, being the Town Clerk for Pompey for many years. He also served as the inspector of election for the Town. GM owned one of the first automobiles in the Manlius area.

He was married to Mara KENYON (daughter of Eri KENYON and Elmina WOODWARD). Mara KENYON was born on 12 Dec 1876 in Oran, Onondaga Co., NY. She died on 16 Oct 1920 in T/Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. She was buried on 19 Oct 1920 in Manlius Cemetery, Onondaga Co., NY. She was a Housewife. Mara was a graduate of Faytteville High School. As a young lady, he was an accomplished equestrian, riding both side saddle and astride. On one occasion, her horse bolted for the barn and by extreme agility she dismounted before the horse ran under the low doorway.

She was noted for speaking ill of no one. When challenged to say something good about a generally unpleasant member of the community, she remarked that she admired the way the lady wore her spectacles.

George Morgan LEWIS and Mara KENYON had the following children:

18 i. Benjamin E. LEWIS was born on 4 Jul 1899. He died on 29 Dec 1899. He was buried in Manlius Cemetery, Onondaga Co., NY. Dorothy Lewis states that Benjamin E. Lewis died of a skin infection. His gravestone states he was 5 months, 25 days old.

+20 iii. Carl Arthur LEWIS.
21 iv. Della Mae LEWIS was born on 1 Jan 1907. She died in 1960 in Niagara Falls. She was buried in Manlius Cemetery, Onondaga Co., NY.
22 v. Ruth E. LEWIS was born in 1909. She died in 1911. She was buried in Manlius Cemetery, Onondaga Co., NY. Dorothy Lewis states that Ruth Lewis died of pneumonia.
+23 vi. Dorothy Jane LEWIS.

He was married to Louisa THOMPSON. Louisa THOMPSON was born on 5 May 1892. She died in 1982. She was buried in Manlius Cemetery, Onondaga Co., NY.

16. Marion Jane LEWIS died on 20 Dec 1950.

She was married to E.B. MERWIN M.D.. No children resulted from this marriage. She was divorced from E.B. MERWIN M.D..

17. Morgan Hubbard LEWIS was born on 13 Dec 1888. He died on 1 Feb 1979.

He was married to Marian DAWLEY. The date of marriage may have been 16 Jun 1914. Marian DAWLEY was born in 1892. She died on 5 Jul 1960. Morgan Hubbard LEWIS and Marian DAWLEY had the following children:
