The Leader Statesman November 11, 1949 DEAD MAN FOUND ON LAKE ROAD 8
Later identified as J.O. Tillery, Kansas City, Manufacturer of Minnow-Life Minnow Buckets. The body of J.O. Tillery, 37, 5238 Paseo, Kansas City, Mo., with the throat slashed almost from ear to ear, was found on what is known as the Pistol Club road, about 16 miles south of Versailles some time before midnight, Wednesday, and the supposition is that Tillery took his own life. Tillery, who operated the Minnow-Life Manufacturing Co., fabricators of minnow buckets, was last seen in Kansas City about 3:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon when he talked with business associates at the Merchandise Mart. Members of the family said they could think of no reason why he would be in this part of the country. The dead man was driving a late model Buick automobile. The car ws found parked with the front end against a large tree to the right of the roadway. There was blood on the front seat cushions and two single-edge razor blades nearby. Tillery's overcoat and underjacket were outside the car and his necktie had been removed. The body was found on a hillside near the car. Another razor blade was near at hand. The slash on the neck measured about 10 inches in length. Two men traveling the road notified Louis Rohls of the State Highway Patrol and Sheriff Cornie Wood. The body was brought to the Kidwell funeral home where identification was made. Members of the family were then notified. Mrs. Lois Tillry, wife of the dead man, said her husband had not been in good health for some time, and that a number of years ago he underwent an operation of stomach ulcers and at that time about sixty-five percent of his stomach was removed. She also said that he had been highly nervous the past several weeks and that he had great difficulty resting at night. Tillery's brother, who came from Kansas City Thursday morning said that his brother's business was thriving and he had no finalcial worries. The brother said, however that Tillery had been worring considerably about the steel strike and the effect it might have on his business. It was only recently that he started to manufacture his own product and only a small supply of sheet steel was on hand at the plant. The brother said, though, that he didn't believe the usual worries of a businessman would cause his brother to take his own life. Members of the family and several friends, accompanied by Coroner B.L. Medicus, went to the scene of the tragedy early Thursday morning. As we go to press the coroner has made no statement concerning an inquest.
