The NewFoundland received it's name from the island NewFoundland.
The average height of a male NewFoundland is 28 inches, and the average height for adult bitches is 26 inches. The weight of an adult male is approximately 130-150 pounds, and the weight for an adult female is 100-120 pounds.
An adult NewFoundland has a water resistant double coat, the outer coat is coarse, but the inner coat if very soft and dense. When the coat is rubbed the wrong way, it will usually fold back into place immediately.
The temperment of a NewFoundland is very gentle, and they are very good around young children. Althought their appearance and size may frighten some people, these dogs really are gentle giants. They will do anything for their masters, and will protect young children if danger strikes.
These dogs are intelligent, strong, and very safe.
NewFoundlands are usually black, with a little bit of white, either on the chest area, feet or on the tail. Any other colour or great amounts of white on the coat are usually disqualified in competitions. Tails with kinks or have a curled edge are sometimes also disquilified, but most of the time marks are just taken off for the fault.
NewFoundlands go great with other animal, sometimes caring for them more then their masters! But NewFoundlands have big hearts and will do anything for the people or animals it loves!
