How to pick a good Christmas tree

Ask the person who is selling them where they were grown. Try to buy a local tree.

If the tree is not frozen, the branches should bend easily without breaking

The needles should be flexible. They should not break if you gently bend it.

Buy a sappy tree, if it is sticky with sap, it is probably fresh.

How to keep your Christmas tree fresh

If it was not cut fresh for you, when you bring it home, cut a 1 inch slice off the bottom and stand it in a bucket of water.

Keep it in a cool, dark place until you are ready to bring it inside.

Water the tree every day. A 6 foot tree can drink up to two quarts of water a day.

Set the tree up away from any heat source.

Be sure to check your lights for signs of wear.

Never use lighted candles on your tree.

Turn off the lights when you leave the house.
