GOLAN [GOE lan] - a city of Bashan in the territory of the half-tribe of Manasseh east of the Jordan River. Golan was assgned to the Gershonite Levites and was one of three cities of refuge east of the Jordan River. It is probably the site of modern Sahem el-Jaulan, about 17 miles east of the Sea of Galilee (1 Chr. 6:71). The area northeast of the Sea of Galilee is sometimes called the Golan Heights.
