TEL AVIV-YAFO tel uh VEEV YAH foh (pop. 367,600), is the largest city in Israel, and one of the most modern in the Middle East. The city lies on the Mediterranean Sea. Tel Aviv-Yafo has more industries than any other Israeli city. Products include chemicals, food and tobacco products, handicrafts articles, machine tools, and textiles. Many foreign embassies and legations have offices in Tel Aviv-Yafo. The city of Tel Aviv was founded in 1909. In 1950, Tel Aviv merged with the nearby city of Jaffa to form Tel Aviv-Yafo.
