Adoniram Allen was a mountain man. He served as one of Professor
Mitchell's guides, on his quest for the highest peak in the Black
Mountains. Adoniram's adventures are recorded in the history books of
Yancey, and Buncome Counties, and his exploits are talked about, with
pride, by his descendants. Adoniram and Lucindal lived on Cattail Creek,
in Pensacola, Yancey Co., NC. Adoniram was a proud man and a fierce
defender of his name. In the Yancey County Court Records, you will find
an action by Adoniram against John Wheeler and his wife. This action was
brought over something John and his wife had said about Adoniram.
Exactly what was said has been lost in the Court Records. Adoniram and
Lucinda lost their son, William, just prior to their own deaths. After
Adoniram and Lucinda died, their family broke up, some stayed in NC, and
others went to Kentucky.

Lucinda Allen has previously been listed as Lucinda Koon. Information
received through the research of Sandra Fender, Bill Hensley, and Millard
Murdock working with Yancey County Probate Minutes of Fall Term 1844
indicates convincingly that Lucy was the daughter of John W. Riddle Sr.
[112]
North Carolina marriage bond lists Lucinda Coon as wife of Adoniram Allen
II, we suspect that Lucinda Riddle married a Coon, was widowed then
remarried.. We have no actual evidence.

I remember a story my dad told about his Grand Pap who was hauling apples
across the mountain to Ashville and stopped on the side of the road and
found a little black boy trying to hid in a hollow log. He took the boy

moved on when he was a fairly old man

About Col. George W. Kirk, 3rd N.C. Mounted Infantry (U.S. Army). His
several companies of soldiers, largely drawn from men in the Union Army
who resided in the Toe River Valley, made life difficult for the
confederate Home Guard. He later regathered many of his old command for
service against the KKK in the so-called Kirk-Holden War (which
ultimately led to the impeachment of North Carolina's Governor, W.W.
Holden).

"Adoniram Allen III and James Allen were brothers. James was my mother's
grandfather. Both were with Wilson (Big Tom) when they found Mitchell
after he fell in 1853. But the story that's told is that Adoniram Allen
II and William Riddle were the two guides that took Mitchell to the top
where he "found" (surveyed) Mt. Mitchell in 1832. And it was to their
place that he was trying to get to when he killed hisself 21 year later.
The only time Wilson ever seen Mitchell was when he pulled his body out
of the creek.
Yes, Bill Hensley was my father, my mother was Ethel Allen. I was born
in Pensacola in 1925. Lived there until I went in the navy in 1942.
Haven't been back very often, but I still miss it. All of your names
made me think I was at the Allen Reunion about 1940. When you see the
name Adoniram you know you have the right tribe of Allens. Each
generation will have at least one and sometimes more. They spell it
several ways, Normm, Niram, Narim, Adannais, etc."
