On St. Patrick's Day, everyone claims to have a bit of the Irish in them.
We eat corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread, and drink green beer.
We wear green no matter our heritage and enjoy the parties and parades.

The true story behind St. Patrick comes with a mixture of truth and legend about the patron saint of Ireland. St. Patrick was born in Scotland and migrated to Britain with his family.  He led a normal life until the age of 16 when he was captured and sold into slavery.   After his escape, he eventually returned to Ireland where he worked for thirty years winning converts, establishing monasteries and school.  He became the second Bishop to Ireland as appointed by Pope Celestine. Tradition also holds that St. Patrick drove all the snakes from Ireland.

The St. Patrick's Day tradition came to America in 1737, when the holiday was first celebrated in Boston.  Today there are parades and events in many cities.

          Story of the Shamrock

Tradition also holds that St. Patrick used the shamrock, a member of the clover family, to illustrate the concept of the Holy Trinity during one of his sermons.  The shamrock today remains the national emblem of Ireland and is displayed the world over by the Irish on St. Patrick's Day.  A four leaf clover is considered unusual and very lucky.
