A COUPLE OF SHORT STORIES
- by Ellen Williams

Back in 1992 Gerry and I acquired two puppies that were just 4 weeks old. She was not expected to live so we also took another of her siblings. I fed these little things with an eye dropper for the first week and then graduated to a toy bottle and then to a regular bottle. You may wonder why such small tools for feeding. Well the puppies were half Toy Terrier and half Toy Poodle so they were very very small. We named one Finn and the other Babette. Finn would not stay in the box beside our bed at night without crying all night and I was at my wits end as to what to do! Finally I took her into the bed with us. I scooted down in the bed and placed her at my head and after that there was never again the whining at night. NOW WE CAN’T GET HER OUT OF THE BED!

When the puppies were about 8 weeks old Babette took it into her head to attack Finn and she actually drew blood so I decided to give her away and keep Finn. Believe it or not Finn cried for days and kept looking for her sister. At this time Finn began to tear up any and all paper she could get too and she was driving me nuts with all the paper all over the house especially the toilet paper. If we left the door to the bathroom open and the toilet roll unrolled enough for her to reach she would unravel the whole roll. It got to the point where I thought we would have to rename her Paper. Thank the Lord she finally out grew that phase and is now just a normal Pest!

Back in 1995 I had an accident at home where I had fallen and did some major damage to the muscles and ligaments surrounding my Rib Cage. I actually tore every muscle and ligament away from the Rib Cage. After crawling back into the house I managed to pull down the phone from the table and call my friend to come and help me because I could not move anymore. During this time Finn was watching me very carefully and knew that something was wrong because she started to whine and lick me in the rib area. When my friend came Finn let her help me because she knew her. My friend had to call the ambulance for me as we were afraid I may have punctured a lung. When the ambulance arrived and the attendants came in Finn would not let them near me. My friend had to catch her and put her in the bedroom and close the door. There was such a racket when she was closed in I thought the house would come down. Ever since then I have realized the Finn would do anything to protect me or Gerry from any harm if at all possible. What a pet, she is greatly loved AND SPOILED! This exact same scenario occurred again when Gerry had his stroke this past October and again in November when he had the second one, only this time I remembered to lock her up.
