JAZZI AND PEPPER- By Doni

I got my first ferret, Nikko, in 1997. He was a sable and an ornery lil fellow. Being new to the ferret world and having no one around to talk to about it, I winged it with him. I have learned alot since he was in my household. He taught me alot, and when I finally started on the Internet, I learned even more. Unfortunately, 4 months into it with Nikko, my children accidentally left the door open while I was gone and he got away. Despite my best efforts, I never found him. I hope he found a new home with a nice family.

In 1998, on my birthday, my fiancee brought Jazzi home to me. She’s the sweetest lil thing. She’s also a sable. Her full name is Confederate Jasmine, after a flower that grows here in the south, but I call her Jazzi because I love Jazz music (especially New Orleans Jazz). Jazzi was an only baby for most of ‘98, spending her time getting to know her new family. She and my 8 year old daughter have taken a liking to one another and they play together all the time. Jazzi loves to travel and camp. We always make room for her in a corner of the tent and then let her out to dig. She does a good job of ‘policing the grounds’ and rearranging all the leaves and twigs to her convenience. Her favorite camping place is at the beach. She has the best time digging in the sand.

The summer of 1998, my fiancee and I took a long road trip while my kids were visiting their father. Jazzi went with us. We traveled a total of 4500 miles through 12 states and Jazzi became quite the accomplished traveler. She learned quickly that while the vehicle was moving, her hammock swayed and she would climb into it and sleep while we were moving. The minute the vehicle would come to a stop, she’d poke her head up to see where we were. She even donned her leather jacket to go to the 95th Anniversary celebration of Harley-Davidson in Milwaukee. She was a hit there. People were asking to take her picture and she posed for them. She’s such a ham!

Right around Christmastime in ‘98, my fiancee came home from work one day and asked me if I’d be interested in another ferret. One of his co-workers had bought a ferret and didn’t have the time it takes to devote to it. Well, of course I was interested, we’d talked about getting Jazzi a pal to play with. So we got Peppermint (Pepper for short). He’s a cinnamon and was 4 months old at that time.

He has already outgrown Jazzi by 2 lbs! He’s an eater! Pepper does some great ‘tricks’. He pushes a big rubber ball around with his nose, chases it when it’s rolled by him and he loves my son’s radio controlled truck. He chases it like a dog chases a real car and tries to bite the tires! It’s hilarious to watch! He’ll get his chance for travel and camping coming up real soon. We are planning a road trip of about 1400 miles in March and then our honeymoon of about another 4500 miles in July this year. We’ll see how he does.
