The Strange But True Story of the
Peke-a-Danes: by Laura Towns

We bred Lacey to the only Blue Champion Great Dane in the state of Arizona. We were hoping for a really great female to breed back to our "stud", Caliban. Midget, so named because she did not attain the size she had promised, but stayed about the size of her mother, did not like Caliban. She was enamoured with our little Pekingese, Leroy. When Midgie came in season, we decided to skip a breeding to let her mature more before becoming a mother, so we housed her in the dog run for the interim. Leroy, of course, was crazy to get to her. He drove us up the wall with his day and night antics.

So, after a few sleepless nights, I thought: "Well, why not put him in with her? After all, what can he do?" (Amazing how your thinking abilities weaken with lack of sleep) The hussy must have laid down for him because a few weeks later I noticed that Midge was having a "severe false pregnancy". I took her to the Vet and had her X-rayed. Sure enough. 5 little puppies in there. They were short-legged, fiddle-fronted, stubby-nosed Great Danes, with ATTITUDE! Midge and Lacey Peanut and Leroy
