Youla from Cambodia & Thailand
, now still in Houston area of TX . These shots are from 1990 period.
Phom from Vienam --this "girl" is in her 70s & had it cut a few years back from several inches on the floor to just above floor!
As a little girk she had beautiful long hair. When she came to USA, and was to get married, she decided to get it cut! When at the beauty shop in Hartford Conn. a newspaper man took the picture that got into local papers and as far away as Germany! She knows as they wrote to her. She also was given a copy of the photo taken by the newspaper.
I was so enthraled with the story and her long hair, I saved the article for years. Later on in life I was working in her area, and found my long kept article again. After a bit of detective work, I called her to see if she was still married and had grown her hair long again. When I got up enough courage to call her, she of course was still married. I sold myself to her over the phone as wanting to write an article of long hair customs if foreign countries such as Greece. I had in truth only had done one article before anywhere remotely connected to this subject. I really wanted to meet this woman who had held my heart in her hand ( looking at photo) many times without knowing it! I was however really interested in the foreign girls custom of keeping their hair long!
The day comes. She brings out all
the
old photos of her childhood in Greece.
Angeliki's
hair was always sooo long!
Angeliki brings out the letter
from Germany.
Angeliki
brings out more photos of her long hair many years ago.
Then she goes out of the room while
I am eating the nice food she serves me and returns with the long saved
cut.
I feel sadness & elation at
the same time for the beauty lost. I photograph her with the lost braids.
I
photograph Angeliki holding them up. Photo
of curl.
We tried
to put them back on, but to no avail! Photo
of braids and photo.
I left with pleasant thoughts and a story that will likely never get told unless I tell it here ! I called her on the phone to have her see this short tribute to a long lost Greek tradgedy. I also still have audio tapes of the interview still never written up.
