Wife of Early Settle In Oklahoma And “Rough Rider”
For Teddy Roosevelt
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Church
of
Christ at Soper for Mrs. Alice Farris Isbell who died Wednesday afternoon
at 4
o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. F. Baker, following a
long illness.
Services were conducted by Elder A. Leroy Elkins, of Hugo.
Mrs. Isbell was born at Whitesboro, Texas on March 7th, 1863. She married
Baily Zachary Isbell and to the union eleven children were born, eight
of them
living, as follows: Mrs. W.F. Baker of Soper; Mrs. Henry Burres, of
Smithville,
Oklahoma,Mrs. Effie Overstreet, of Ft. Worth, Texas; Bailey Isbell,
of Paducah,
Texas; Mrs. Joe D. Van Horn, Boynton, Oklahoma; Mrs. Jim Grayson, of
Ada
Oklahoma; Mrs. Jean LaVallie, of El Paso, Texas;and Zach Isbell of
Olney, Texas.
She is also survived by three brothers, S. Farris of Lane, Oklahoma;
George
Farris, of Beeville, Texas; and John Farris of Frederick, Oklahoma.
She is
survived by 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Isbell has been a member of the Church of Christ for 25 years and
was a
devout Christian. Her husband who was a member of Teddy Roosevelt’s
Rough
Riders and who made made two runs in the “Opening of the Cherokee Strip”
and
the Pontotee-Kickapoo settlement, staking successful claims in each
run, died at
Hartshorne, Oklahoma in 1905.
Pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased. Burial was made in the Soper
Cemetery, in the charge of Woodruff – Jones Funeral Home of Antlers.
