The son of Robert Isbell Jr. and Mary Susan Westbrook. Sam as his family
called him was born August 3rd, 1887 in Deport, Texas. Died December 9th,
1928, and is buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Deport Texas. He
and his three brothers had bought and leased land on which they drilled
for oil. As of 1998 their heirs are still collecting checks from
these sites. Family lore has it that during the depression the brothers
were bringing in over $100.00 a day from these investments. Robert Isbell
was setting on cotton waiting for the price to rise. According to Gordon
Chester Isbell while waiting for the price to go up 10 more cents
,before he sold,
he lost his pants and the cotton too.
Samuel Isbell had known Edith Louvine Norman when she was a small girl and told her that when she grew up he was going to marry her. Sam was 14 years older than Edith. One day when my Great Grandfather Moses Norman was out in the barn milking the cows .Sam came calling and asked him for Edith's hand in marriage. Moses knew that if he didn't approve they would run off and elope. So January 24, 1921 in Red River County Sam and Edith were married.
Grandma
Edith Isbell miscarried a set of twin boys while trying to hand crank
her model A car. Sam had bought them matching cars. I think I was told
they cost about $500 a piece back then. Later they had (my mother)
Sylvia Louvine Isbell, born August 16, 1925 in Clarksville, Texas, and
her sister Billie Wayne Isbell born August 14, 1927 in Clarksville too.
Mother has told me about the tenants and their little shacks on the property.
Edith Louvin Norman was born August 25, 1901 in Couch,
Oregon County Missouri. She died 12th June 1973 and is buried in Laurel
Land Cemetery in Dallas Texas. Edith outlived 3 husbands, her tombstone
reads Edith Trousdale. Her parents were Moses Ezekial Norman and Sarah
Athalee Phillips.
