Isbell had a revolver and received a death wound before he succeeded in drawing it.
He was about 45 years old and with his family has been living in the
present place of residence for the past two years.
The remains were brought to town Wednesday evening and shipped to Oklahoma City for identification, and will be returned here Friday morning for burial.
The officers knowing Isbell to be a dangerous man, and a dead shot, took the precaution to get the drop on their man and kept it.
The crime for which Isbell was wanted was the murder of George and Herman Fox, aged 19 and 21 respectively, which occurred near Oklahoma City over eight years ago, in a difficulty over a lease. Isbell was arrested and jailed in Oklahoma City, but escaped and succeeded in concealing his identity until recently, during which time he has served in the Cuban and Philippine War. By some means the officers got trace of Isbell, whose assumed name was Zach Love, living near here, and on Tuesday morning last Sheriff G. W. Garrison and Deputy Sam Bartell, of Oklahoma City in company with Deputy Dowell of South McAlester came over to make the arrest, with the results as above stated.
There are conflicting reports as to the reward offered for Isbell's capture, one is that there was $600. And another $1,500, and the dead man's son-in-law, H. Burres, says so far as he has been able to learn there was no reward.
The above mentioned article was sent to me by Mary Lu Johnson. The photograph of Zachariah Bailey Isbell was furnished by Heloise Ridgway.
