Healthy Kosher Recipes

This page provides healthy Kosher recipes of traditional Jewish foods.  Most of what we consider traditional Jewish food always seems to be high in sodium and fat. Times are changing. Food is refrigerated and few of us are so hungry that an intake of fat is needed for survival. None of this changes Halacha and the mitzvah of eating kosher foods. Taking risks with one's health has always been in conflict with our respect for life. It is a great puzzle to me why prepared kosher foods have enormous amounts of sodium. If I had my way, I'd have their hexsure removed on the basis of their threat to life. If the rest of the world can have a low sodium and saturated fat diet, why can't we? I have no patience for someone saying "I'm afraid to change the recipe, it may not come out right!" A good cook/baker does not depend on recipes and with a little experimentation, whole eggs, saturated fats, and sugar can be replaced.

The recipes that appear here, are designed with both traditional kasherus and current dietary concerns. In the near term, the recipes that include sugar will be modified to accommodate artificial sweeteners.

If you have a recipe you'd like to contribute, I'll post it with credit.

An opinion from our sponsor, me: It is my opinion that there is no such thing as "Traditional Jewish Food." As a people, we have been allowed and occasionally invited to live in countries present and past for hundreds of years and then kicked out. We have moved around, a lot. What we call traditional Jewish food is food consistent with that of out previous host country. One should note that traditional Sephardic food is considerable different than Ashkenazic. Ignoring that complication, food is often regionally, i.e. note that some Jews think of borsht as being a cold sweet dish while others as a hot dish.
