LRC was born in this house at 5 Chestnut Street in Cortland,N.Y.and spent his formative years here. He attended Cortland HighSchooland entered Syracuse University prior to his entry into the ArmyAir Corpsin 1941.
There is very little I have been able to find out about LRC'sboyhoodwhich would explain the remarkable and courageous man and leaderhe became. He seems to have been just one of the neighborhoodboys witha lot of energy and an outgoing physical nature. I do know from talkingto some of his boyhood friends, that he had natural leadership qualities;people seemed drawn to him and liked him a great deal. He displayed noparticular interest in flying until just prior to his enlistment when hehad the opportunity to see the Link Aircraft Trainer at an exhibitionandmeet its inventor. His main interests as a teenager seem to have beenfastcars and girls. He once told me that if he hadn't taken to flying, he wouldprobably have taken to racing cars as a living. His boyhood nickname was"Squeak" reflecting the fact that he was notoriously tight with a buck.
This is a picture taken of LRC's parents, Levi R. Chase and HarrietBenedict Chase, on their honeymoon in upstate New York at Cranberry Lake.LRC's father was originally from near Theresa, N.Y., attended college atColgate, and moved to Cortland to practice law. He was in private practice, but also served as a district attorney for Cortland County.
