Cheap Trick - Seen at the Beaumont Club, April 27th - Very, very, very (did I say very?) loud. Extremely loud. Also very good. Opened with "Ain't That a Shame" with an absolutely killer intro and it just cooked from there on out. Besides being the biggest hams in the rock world, the band proved to be superior showmen as well. There must have been several hundred guitar picks tossed, flicked, and dumped into the audience, with the crowd scrambling to get one of those tiny souvenirs. Although the show was shorter than their last KC set (Roadhouse Ruby's, 1999), they still managed to play most of the best known hits, closing the regular set with "Surrender". The encore was accented with "Dream Police". The opening band was "The Front", which had a compatible sound and was entertaining enough. I didn't particularly care for the lead singer's stage manners, but the lead guitarist was superb with an understated presence. Cheap Trick is supposedly coming back to KC this year to promote a new album that is yet to be recorded.
Steve Earle - Seen at the Beaumont Club, March
21st - Another great show with a packed house. Earle displays a little
crankiness and swears a lot onstage, even bordering on audience abuse,
but the crowd seems to love it. He lightened up quite a bit as the
show progressed, even smiling. Regardless, he puts on a fantastic
show and manages to outdo his previous performance with each show.
Highlights were an awsome "Copperhead Road" with a long, teasing intro
on mandolin, The Chambers Brothers' "Time" as a close for the first of
two encore sets, and a pretty hot version of The Beatles' "She's a Woman"
to open the second encore set.
