All of these characters exist on role-playing games based on the planet of crafts, holds and weyrs; dragons, dolphins, and men; that is... Pern.
Pern Games. That's Anne McCaffrey's fully copyrighted PERN. Not Porn. Unless you count a certain singularly silly game where it's hard to tell the difference. Ahem.
All of these games run on permission from AM (much thanks!). They include a variety of MUSH (Multi-User Shared Hallucination), MOO (MUD, Object-Oriented), MUD (Multi-User Dimension), MUCK (beats me), TinyMu*, and variations on the above. The main difference between these is code used for OOC (Out Of Character) commands, such as paging players and creating objects. Many webpages offer helpful guides on the finer details of coding and simple manipulation, and the games themselves tend to have extensive help, +help, or news files covering both IC (In Character) & OOC points. Glossaries are also posted.
To play one such game, Telnet or Java (often through Telnet) browsers are required. A client is, however, strongly suggested. Many clients can be downloaded for free (SimpleMU MUSH Client and MUSHclient, for example) as shareware; however, it is polite you intend to play for long. Cost is around to send the creators a check if $15-25 US for most. Also, paying and registering tends to enable special functions unavailable in shareware version.
Frost Fire MUSH -- telnet://mush.frostfiremush.net:4201/ . This game includes Azov Weyr, Starmount Weyr, and Icevale Hold. Azov is jungle-like, with beaches holding Dolphincraft Hall. Starmount is icy. Icevale is a sub-terranean, proudly independent farming Hold under Starmount's area. Crafter chars are easy to obtain, of nearly any rank. InstaRiders are accepted. Metallics are not the emphasis of the game, and can be IC-only. Canon is NOT enforced especially strictly; creativity and fun are the main points. Dragons speak to EVERYONE. No Thread; set during an Interval. This game is very small. Probably 2 (wee hours) to 15 people are on at any given time. The wiz are fairly flexible. Players range from extremely, incredibly talented *melt* to ... not-so-hot. Newbies are always welcome! Know that this game is probably very different from others, due to the truly crazy aspects of player and theme: from love triangles to wacky, lovable dragons. I really enjoy this game. It's also home of the "<eskimo" global. (^_^)

Harper's Tale MOO -- telnet://harpers-tale.com:7007/. Consists of Ista Weyr, Ista Hold, High Reaches Weyr, Gar Hold, Master Sea Hold, Keroon Hold, Tillek Hold, and ... several others, I think. Sorry, but I can't remember the new ones. There are MANY places to settle. Includes main crafthall for most crafts -- healer, herder, harper, dolphincraft, whatnot. Thread. Gigantic game. Numbers up to nearly 200 at once, seldom less than 20 (though I've seen 3, once, in the wee hours). 50 - 90 is probably the typical range, but I couldn't say with certainty. I started out here. I think MOO is easier than MU*. I really like this game; some incredible players and creative sorts. However, it IS definitely a big game. There are plenty of newbies and pure twinks as well. I tend to start playing mainly with a select group of friends here moreso than on others, oddly enough, considering the huge numbers of new people available for RP. You'll find the most political problems here, just because of the size of the game.
StarStones MOO -- telnet://starstones.wolfpaw.net:9998/. Includes ... Crom Hold, Igen Weyr, Telgar Weyr, Jagged Spires, and a few others. Telgar's cold; Igen's a desert. Crafts include Weaver, Smithcraft, Minecraft, Starcraft, Harper, and Healer. Other crafters are welcome. Thread. This is ... a very good-sized game. Smallish, but typically 10 - 30 people on at once, perhaps. Very nice. There's ANSI color! I really, really like this game. I highly suggest this one to anybody; it's got wonderful, creative players (some of whom have a lot of free time), and just...a good atmosphere.
Threadfall MUSH -- telnet://mush1.nis4u.com:4201/ . The game consists of Ista Weyr and Ista Hold, though the hold is, really, NPC. Crafters are quite welcome. InstaRiders are not being accepted anymore. Thread. For a rather new game, it's already attracted a good crowd of truly excellent RP-ers. Let's see. The wizzen consist of a young, married, college couple. They're quite nice, as it goes, and the man writes poetry. ;) They pretty much stick to canon. Players include some immensely talented people. And some of them are also very depressed teenagers, which is semi-typical for a MU*, I suppose. I don't know people that well, having stopped playing there a while ago due to limited access time, but there are definitely some ... different ... characters. Creative ideas are definitely welcome in character definition and background. The Weyrleader and Weyrwoman, ICly, have something of a love/hate relationship, I suppose. There are some excellent logs posted on the main page as well as on various character pages.
