Description
Black-brown hair, glossy in nature, drops to her shoulders when not held back in a loose runnertail. Fine bones are balanced by wide angles along her face, a flattish nose resting in the midst of pink-tinged cheeks. Wide-set brown eyes are dark and almond-shaped, giving all of Pern a calm regard from beneath elegant 'brows. Her skin is clear and golden, caught between dusky and smooth with the faint sheen of good health. Although quite short in stature, and certainly youthful in face and figure, the woman holds herself in such a manner to suggest a great deal of self-discipline and aplomb. Her general posture is straight-backed, head high and gaze steady, while her movements convey efficiency smoothly blended with a sort of unconscious, not fully polished, grace.
A loose white blouse of sisal rests low on smooth, golden-skinned shoulders. The sleeves fall to fairly thin wrists, where the fabric is gathered and then continues a few fingers' widths in a showman's frill. Below middling neck, the blouse gently follows womanly shape to slender waist, where it is tucked into a harper blue skirt. Spanning to about a hand's width above her knees, the pleated skirt rustles quietly with her movements. A natural golden hue to full, well-shaped legs is heightened by a healthy sheen to their silky smoothness. Plain sandals of white-dyed wher hide have a low heel that barely raises this young woman from her height of about 5 feet.
A simple, clean, and neatly arranged knot indicates that Cymri is the WeyrTrader for Igen Weyr.
Background
ICLY, most people probably don't know all that much about Cymri's background, save that she lived in trader wagons earlier, perhaps forever, and doesn't seem to have any family around. She's never been in any serious, rumor-causing relationships or otherwise gotten herself in trouble around the Wery. People who've been around for a while should probably know who she is, as WeyrTrader, even though that position largely consists of arranging tithes at neighboring holds, rather than actually doing the trading she used to do.
But here's the whole story, only slightly abridged:
Cymri was independent and responsible early on and light-hearted 'til 8 or 9. Then, her father died; her older brother ran out the next turn. (he's the only immediate family left alive now, currently NPC.) Her mother was a wonderful dancer with Harper Hall, well-known and beautiful, but she got sick (a disfiguring illness) when Cymri was 11 or 12 turns old. No longer able to dance, she left the hall and settled instead with a wagon of traders. There, Cymri and her mother began a new life. Cymri spent those first years of adolescence growing up with the skills of the trader craft imparted by those in their wagon. However, after about a turn of more rapid deterioration when Cymri was about 15, the disease finally took her mother's life, leaving Cymri alone.
Cymri was a fairly outgoing girl - slim in figure, bright (in attitude and intellig ence), responsible, peppery, brave. With her new obligations to fend for herself, she became more authoritative, actively confident, and strong-willed. While perhaps a little less sunny in disposition, she remained friendly, joking around now only with h er closer friends (mainly her wagonmates). Possessing a naturally keen eye for details within the trade, which would later be cultivated, Cymri thrust herself into improving her skills as a way to deal with her mother's death. The result? A little less resolution about her mother, perhaps, but certainly an effective trader, despite her age. The key, she saw, was mutual respect. But she /was/ still young. Surprisingly feisty at times, her experiences have left her with a multitude of more hidden qualities, which she seldom had the chance to express in the midst of working and growing up.
Think of Cinderella, now. With her mother's death, Cymri began having to take care of all the extra chores in the wagon. Soon, she was cooking, cleaning, and trading more often than not, leaving little time for socializing. Though constantly busy, she never spoke out against the woman who had been so kind to house her. However, problems with the two rivaling sons of the woman in charge, whose affections were first hesitantly (but warmly) received and then felt to be frightening, soon left Cymri without a home. The woman would tolerate none of that mess.
Cymri, kicked out of the home she'd known for nearly 5 turns, soon settled with another wagon, led by a 28-Turn old man named Baskir. Each ragtag member had their own habits and secrets, but most were kind to Cymri, the youngest of them. A cunning trader, Baskir taught her some of the tricks of the trade and generally wooed her with his lyrical southern boll acc e nt and clever ways. But Baskir actually regarded their affair as little more than a new challenge, and then a pleasant fling. When he broke it off with Cymri not long after her 18th Turnday, he was perfectly willing to let her stay in the wagon as usual . But Cymri was not. Feeling hurt and betrayed, she struck up a bitter argument with Baskir and parted on sour terms. She finally expressed how she felt about some of his more underhand business dealings, leaving little criticism out -- quite the unusua l behavior for Cymri, but she'd always considered friendships and relationships secure and dependent on honesty. His deception wounded her deeply, especially since he was her first real lover. Thus, her vision of relationships slightly mangled, Cymri packed her scant belongings and quickly left, finding her way to Alanis's trader caravan, currently settled outside of Igen Weyr. There, she was accepted with warmth, if also some curiosity, and began her new life again, adjusting with her usual set determination.
Then, her life was suddenly switched around once more. Before she'd been with Alanis for even a season, Cymri made a visit to nearby Igen Weyr -- one which would change everything. She had the good fortune to run across several of the leading ladie s of the weyr -- Gamma, Idris, and Shiana. Discovering unexpectedly that she'd been quite unaware of much of what went on with her caravan, Cymri responded with her usual serious, Let's-Get-Things-Accomplished attitude. Much to her surprise, she was the n offered a position at the weyr: WeyrTrader, effective ASAP. With a brief explanation, as well as gratitude to Alanis, Cymri quickly packed her bag and dragged her bedroll to her new home. Since then, she's been trying to meet people and, to /her/ surpr ise, relaxing. She even took in an apprentice-assistant of sorts (an adolescent named Sarilee).
After a bit, change came again. Cymri was sniffed out by one of Igen's dragons, who declared her yummy and fit for Search. So, the Weyrtrader was reluctant ly persuaded to Stand. With her stood Alanis and Shiana, both of whom had helped her in the past. Friends Lynnea and Aliana both were Searched, too. Still her mood was mostly that of impatience to get back to work, and worry that Sarilee would fail as h er temporary replacement. As candidacy passed, though, Cymri did begin to relax, making new friends and getting to know her other friends better. Eggs hatched, and Cymri was left on the Sands, without a lifemate. But she did leave with something else: a new restlessness. She thought there'd be no problem, that she merely missed her work. But time shortly proved that idea wrong, and the restlessness has been steadily growing since.
More currently: Let's see... Cymri went out to the lake one day and got Searched again (by Eilish and Loralith!), and sent rather abruptly to the candidate barracks. And Cymri has started talking more to G'min again, but, of course, as a Candidate she can only talk. Besides, she got over him a long time ago, right? So, Cymri has a few things on her mind lately, and is started to seriously wonder about this whole candidacy thing. Eilish told her that being Searched twice actually meant she was that much more likely to find a lifemate, rather than the opposite, and G'min put his confidence in her, BUT Cymri, herself, is just a little confused.
Hatching day came and went, leaving Cymri once more alone upon the sands. The more amazing news, though, was the Impression of not one, but TWO golds: one to Yelena, the somewhat infamous child that she is, and the other to Siobhan, a tanner. After this second Hatching, Cymri was a bit contemplative. She has once more gotten deeply involved in her work as WeyrTrader, seeming with more success. After all, it would now seem quite definite that her life is not going to be undergoing anymore drastic changes. What a relief, to Cymri's way of thinking.
