Alitzah
 Headwoman
Southern Weyr
Note: The flower is mine, but the lady with grapes is a picture taken from ... Sewdoll graphics, I believe. It is entirely theirs, and not at all mine. Thanks!
Description
Brown hair is once more sleekly trimmed, cascading to mid-shoulder. Strong cheekbones lead to full lips, while her nose is perhaps a bit smaller than expected. Warm, golden brown eyes have a hint of laughter lines at the corners, and the hint of weariness has nearly faded. Still youthful, she holds her head high, and a dimple appears when she smiles.
Her hair is held back and nearly hidden by a dark brown veil with alternating red and gold striations. A sleeveless brown tunic falls over lush curves to mid-thigh, hanging slightly on her slim frame -- she seems to have lost some weight. A brilliant burgundy shade sarong wraps around her before falling to her ankles. A simple pair of sandals adorns her feet, adding not more than a fingers' width to her scant height.
She looks to be in her late 20's. (She is, in fact, 31 turns, and 132 days.)
(Obviously, the picture is not of the same outfit as the desc.)
Hothead
The base of very hot flames often appear to be blue, and just such a shade is embodied in the form of the large firelizard. The color lightens to white on his ridges and tailtip, though only his eyes, in their ravenous firelizard desperation, reflect the orange which appears in his fiery counterpart.
BACKGROUND:
Born and raised at High Reaches Weyr, Alitzah's father was the Steward. There was but one sibling before her, a boy who died in infancy. And, for 5 and a half long Turns, there were no siblings afterwards, either. In that small interim, her parents were nearly certain there would be no other, for try as they might, Razzah could not get pregnant. Thus, with the coming of a second child at last, and a boy at that, her parents rejoiced. He was named Alizam, and was raised with abundant love, and the expectations that he would follow in his father's footsteps.
For Alinte, despite being accustomed to working with such figures as the Weyrwoman and Headwoman, had originally come from a small hold and a long line of dominating fathers. Razzah, for example, was a sweet woman, slight of frame and eager to please. Yet she was intelligent, too, and had constantly sought to give her daughter the one thing she could not: equality in Alinte's eyes. Before Alizam was born, Razzah, though sad, worked on convincing her husband to raise the girl for such a position instead. Stewardess would be fine for her, she argued. It did not have to be a son. The arrival of a son was expected to stop such talk, but within a decade, Alizam had made it clear that this would .not. be his future. Rather, the boy wanted to be a guard. Three turns later, he changed his mind, but still not to his father's choice. Now, he wanted to be a herder. Razzah, meanwhile, continued to teach her daughter what she knew, hoping that Alinte would see Alitzah for the clever child she was. Alitzah, too young to know bitterness, hoped to please her father, and thus became quite knowledgeable of her father's work.
Dragoniding had never entered the equation for either of their two children, but Alinte and Razzah where to see both carried away on Search. First went Alitzah, just shy of 20 Turns, to a weyr far away, all the way down to the southern continent. There, she first hoped to Impress. There, she was left standing on the sands with the other discarded candidates. Not eager to return home just yet, she looked for a position to fill at the weyr. And found none.
But she did hear word that Southern Weyr's Headwoman was aging, much like their Weyrwoman, and the Assistant had recently moved become a rider's weyrmate at the weyr for which Alitzah had stood. Sensing that this was her chance to prove to her father that she could make it to an honorable position, too, she moved to Southern Weyr. At first, she was considered too young even for the Asst. Headwoman's position. Some even laughed at the idea. Yet the need was urgent and the other candidates unlikely. So it was that Alitzah, at 21 Turns and a season, came to be the Asst. Headwoman of Southern Weyr. With her father's shrewdness in business, and her mother's more social nature, Alitzah found the more personal duties of Headwoman quite suited to her. Within a Turn or two, she had gradually taken increasing responsibilities, so that when the current Headwoman decided to retire, Alitzah, at only 24 Turns, was none the less ready for the job. Young & short, she relied on a firm will and the perfect upraising for the job to overcome the obstacles first thrown at her by the Weyr. Still, there were occasions when she was very glad to turn to the retired Headwoman for assistance or advice.
Alizam, in the meantime, was learning, once more, that his goal could change. Dreams of the guard made him reject his father's profession, dreams of herdercraft made him leave home, but it was dreams of dragonriding which, at 16, made him reject his knot (in a rather unheard of manner, which earned him a reputation as a somewhat crazed and strong-willed dreamer). Still, he returned to his family at High Reaches Weyr. A Turn passed, and still he was not even asked to Stand. He'd heard his sister's story of being left behind on the sands, also, but he didn't care. He knew he would Impress. He just knew it.
So, it came as no surprise (to Alizam) when he was finally Searched out by a blue from Igen Weyr, and did just as he knew he would -- Impressed. With his new bronze lifemate, L'am was a very happy, very busy boy. Busy enough, eventually, that he impregnated another rider -- much to her shock and dismay. The mother was furious, and would have nothing to do with the child. And poor L'am certainly didn't know what to do with a ... a... baby... So, what did he do, but call upon his sister for help." And please, come quickly..."
The sudden disappearance of Alitzah, just in time for the much-needed clutching at Southern Weyr, certainly stirred up some gossip. Some had heard that she'd gone up north to help a pregnant sister. Others, to help a brother with his child. All they knew was that it must be serious to have dragged her away from settling the newly searched candidates. Of course, as we all know, she actually went to help her brother, indeed -- packing bags and wasting little time in getting passage up to Igen.
