Sydnie
Let's see. What all is there to say about this particular little monster? ;-) She's a wonderful, wonderful character to play. I lost her original character pages, so I'm still trying to patch together all the (MANY, MANY) logs I used to have posted on the kid. I suppose I might start with background, desc, all the usual stuff, huh?
Background:
Sydnie is the only child of a couple living in a small cothold near Honshu weyr. Her mother died in childbirth, and the father, a touch deranged by the loss and overwhelmed by the new, bawling baby girl, raised her on caprine milk. Angry at his wife for dying and at himself for putting her in the condition to die, he blamed her death on feminine weakness and raised Sydnie like a boy. He told her women were weak, couldn't hold up under pressure, and prone to frivolties. Hence, Sydnie learned to talk and act like a rough-and-tumble little boy. She came to despise all ways of women, having no true contact with them from the isolation of their small cothold.
Over the turns, the cothold itself grew rather shabby, with only the father and young girl to keep order. Thus, Sydnie was left in a ramshackle cothold, with a few sevendays' supply of necessary foods and a small herd of caprines when a second tragedy struck. Father dead of a heart attack, the girl was left without the means to take care of things, and not exactly willing to admit it. Stubborn in her own right, she nearly turned away the riders that began showing up, making inquiries. But finally she let a surprisingly (for her) buff female bluerider help with the body. That would be that, except winter had arrived (and a fierce one at that) without the caprines being herded up north. Syd was smart enough to admit she couldn't do that by herself, and a series of riders convinced her to join the weyr for winter. But /just/ for the winter. So she said.
Here's a message from when I first created Sydnie:
Sydnie Thu Aug 19 1999 The New Kid on the Block
Well, folks, Sydnie's TP is finally starting to get interesting -- that is to say, riders have discovered her, winter has nearly killed her caprines, and she has decided to move into Honshu Weyr -- for the winter. Syd has made it clear, though, that she'll just be staying the winter, then returning with her caprines to /her/ cothold. So she says.
Yet Sydnie is certainly impressed by a few of the female riders she's seen so far. They're ... strong?
Which all comes down to this: Syd is incredibly confused by the women at the weyr and beginning to doubt the knowledge she was raised with. Over the next sevenday or so, Sydnie's in for further shock, so you just might want to come and enjoy it, or maybe try to lend her a hand in figuring out Pernese society.
Sheltered by her father, Syd hasn't a clue about politics, foods, clothing styles... virtually anything outside of cotholds and caprines.
Just one warning: as those first riders will tell, she has quite the temper, is stubborn as her own caprines, and isn't likely to respond well to "weak" girls. She also takes offense quickly. ;)
But if you're willing to RP with a monster-child, it could be fun. And, as Br'den will testify, she can be an okay kid sometimes. It just helps if you're a macho, buff, or male.

............................................................................
Of course, now Sydnie's been there for much longer than the winter. That has something to do with the fact that her cothold was crushed under ... the blizzard? (or, if truth be told, dragon feet caused the crush -- tsktsk, and without telling Sydnie, either) So she settled to a permanent Weyr life, and finally admitted to enjoying it. They let her keep her caprines there, so she still gets to take care of them and feel she's contributing that way, since they do still trade the caprines as need be. And she's getting a good education, even if she had to start out with the little ones. That was an ego-knock, to be sure, but luckily Sydnie's a fast learner and a pretty good student. She's apt to fight with the boy next over who makes fun of her age, even though he's just a little one, but she also listens quickly when she's told to stop -- as long as the boy is removed from her vicinity.
And Sydnie's becoming a ...young lady? Well, not quite. But she's just starting to display the physical signs of it, much to her dismay. Tomboy all the way, she enjoys being taller, but just works that much harder rough-housing with the boys to keep from getting all curvy like one of them -- those -- wimpy girls.
Her ORIGINAL desc:
Sydnie
Hair a tangled matt against dirty cheeks, angular features are most often scrunched up slightly, blue eyes narrowing in a steady gaze of mixed skepticism and distrust. Tight scowl of lips just barely fails to disguise their fullness. Her build is lean, wiry; her stance defiant.
Rough-hewn tunic looks like it's seen several Turns' worth of use, and the washings might have been few and far between. It's too big for her, the sleeves rolled up countless times just to reach her palms, and the hem falling to her knees. The trousers bear the snaggled look of a hand-me-down and are stitched in a fashion long out of style. She must be about 10 or 11 Turns old.
Her CURRENT desc:
Sydnie
Dark hair, chopped raggedly off at shoulder length, frames a small face. Angular features are most often scrunched up slightly, blue eyes narrowing in a steady gaze of mixed skepticism and distrust, now as often replaced by a lively glimmer -- not mischief, mind you, but *life*. Tight scowl of lips has relaxed into a more common thoughtful frown, which just barely fails to disguise their fullness. Her build is lean, wiry; her stance defiant.
A notably cleaner outfit than the one Sydnie brought with her to the Weyr, the tunic is a rich brown hue, sleeves settling nicely at her wrists. Beneath, a loose pair of trousers is a rather unremarkable brown. She looks to be about 13 turns old, and perhaps a little taller to those who met her early on -- still just as wiry, though.
OKAY, so, what's the latest info?
Sydnie is several Turns older now. Thanks to the local harper, she speaks slightly better grammar and such, but she's still likely to say "ain't" if she's upset, and she's still got an accent. It is /not/ advisable to remark on that accent (for an idea what she sounds like, think "can't" = "kin't" and some other strongly southern/hillbilly US accent-sounds). She still gets along best with the boys, when she's not challenging them to a race, but she's definitely taller. And, as some scarce few would know, she's becoming a *shudder* woman. Scary thought, huh?
RL foo has kept me from playing my darling as much as she deserves, but basically she's still acting TOMBOY-ish. Those stupid girls would better spend their time training, or running, or learning with the harper, than "batting their 'lashes'" at the guys. And -- ugh -- why would you ever want to act so stupid over a boy anyway? It's sure not going to Impress him, and he's not worth groveling over to begin with, not if you can beat him in an honest footrace.
But still. Hormones and such do have their effects, and I expect Sydnie to start seeing things in a new perspective before much longer. But then, that's especially easy in a Weyr where half the world takes on a new slant when the Queen rises. Last time was ... shall we say ... influencing, for Sydnie. The next time should be that much more interesting. :)
