Hi, there are many helpful tutorials around the web. We will list the most
helpful, as we can at Web Links. Each internet provider has help pages with
frequently asked questions. All are helpful, but everyone especially beginners,
needs more explanation at times. I have found that the wording each person
uses can make a difference. Our helpful site may be of assistance to one person,
but someone else may look at it in a different light.
This page is far from expert help, just to provide assistance for anyone
who swam helplessly around the web looking for information etc. on publishing
etc. We recommend you take your time and keep reading until you find the
tutorial site that is helpful to you. You may find some information on one site
and more helpful tips on another. Feel free to send us e-mail.
We may not be able to help, but possibly can send you to another site that can.
This page was mainly set up because many AOL users would ask how
I was able to work something out on my page. The message boards
are helpful, but the guides and volunteers cannot always help everyone. As
mentioned above, language does make a difference. Internet providers
do make a difference and the editors you use. AOL has its own unique
problems. You can work around the problems and they've improved over the
past couple of years.
It also
changes html into hyperlinks making it difficult to copy
and or send ring codes and the like. You can place a dot in the link or change
a symbol for mail purposes. As noted above, there have been significant
improvements in the last 2 years, but I noticed with Microsoft Front Page
and similar programs to you must copy your text to Note pad or Word pad,
then copy and paste into your mail or web page html for the codes to work.
Even with outlook mail you must remove the hyperlink to copy and paste
to send the mail address.

When AOL is slow to bring up mail or an AOL site, move your pointer
all the way to the top left of your screen. Click on file as the arrow appears
(or another pointer you may be using). Now leave that open and slide
across on your tool bar to help. Click on help. After that opens scroll down
and click on about AOL. Press okay on the about AOL sign that
appears and your mail should have arrived. This has improved to.

If you had a flash session arranged and your mail doesn't appear
after you have done the above, the mail won't appear. Do the above,
then click on the mail again. It should appear this time along with a flash
mail session statement. Click on the X on the top right of the flash
statement to exit the statement. It will disappear and then you can
read your mail. Since Aol 4 and 5 this has been improved. A new problem
is that the images become embedded and won't open with 4.0 and up.
Usually, if you just wait an hour or until the next day, it does straighten out.

A reminder or information for a new AOL member and other servers.
AOL has a compressed graphics option to use with your browser.
It is usually already turned on. I have been told if that feature is on
and you load graphics to your web site, they will not show properly
or not show at all. Go to your browser tool bar and click on properties
Click on graphics and click the box to remove the arrow for compressed
graphics, if its not checked then its not turned on and leave as is.
For Aol users click on preferences, then www preferences. Then click
on graphics and click the box to remove the arrow, if the feature is on.
This feature can stop graphics from showing when you visit web sites
and can stop mail images with 4.0 from appearing.

Backing up your pages is important. Make a copy and keep it on your disk.
Do not count on any background program or the new windows set back
or back up programs. Save them to a cd and a disk. Servers can go down,
just like our computer can crash, so can the online servers. Save your pages
and all your pictures to a disk. An easy way to copy is to just highlight the text
of your entire page and then copy it into a new e-mail. Then click save as
under file in your online toolbar and save to a disk, your A drive, CD etc.
You can save any text this way, that you wish to review later.

If you want to know how someone has created something on their page
or have a similar item and just can't get it up and running. You can click on
the right side of your mouse on the page. When words pop up, look for
View Source. You would click on view source and a small window will
appear with the text of the page. Remember, it is not right to take another's
work, but most html etc. is available through tutorials and service provider
faq's. You can see the script used to create the mouse over for the text links.
Most artists on the web allow their graphics to be copied for use on personal
pages. Always remember to click on the right button of your mouse over the
graphic and save to your computer as picture or target, when a small window
pops open. This is very important and an ongoing problem. Someone could
forget, so all must remember to think before they click. It also considered
netiquette to provide a link back to the creator.

Pop-up advertisements are your choice at most sites. I prefer banners.
It's just an extra link and some pages and sites can move more
slowly to begin with. Geocities allows you to choose your preference,
Fortune supplies the banner. I have found if your surfing and hit your
stop button before the pop up appears, you can avoid it. If you want
to see all the graphics of the page without, then wait for the pop-up.
For links to tutorials and more, visit our Storme Millennium Links page.
You can find links there for sites with scripts, like the one I used on
this page to create the mouse over for the text links. On that page also I
have a fixed background created with a few words of html. On my opening
page I used a marquee, its simple to create. Most programs like Microsoft
Front Page and Dreamweaver include these scripts nowadays.

BOOKMARK TIP This comes from a Neighborhood Guide leader
for bookmarking in your current browser and then exporting to another
browser or computer. Want to export your Internet Explorer bookmarks
to another computer or browser? Here's the four step method. 1. Select
"Import and Export..." from the File menu 2. Export Favorites to a file
(e.g. a:\bookmark.htm) 3. Take the floppy to the other computer 4. Open
Explorer, select Import from the file menu, and import the file from
the floppy. This works in IE 5.0, but can try in others. you can also,
export your favorites to netscape! Just tell it to overwrite the
bookmark.html file, when you are asked, but you will then LOSE
the bookmark in netscape. You can back up your bookmarks
by saving them to a file preferably on disk. If you are on AOL
you can save your address and favorite places also. Just look
for the save and or replace button near the bottom of the boxes
and save them to a disk. Remember you do not want to save
too many graphics ever to your hard drive, they take up too
much space. Save them to disks or CD's instead.
Please
send e-mail, if you have any questions
etc.
